Out of the Blue

After a couple of semi-predictable weeks in the NFL, yesterday was one of those upset specials, which completely blew up my picks for the football pool. It was pretty rough on many of us, so I guess some of it will come out in the wash. My Giants losing was not an upset, but they were considered a contender coming into the season, and their 0-3 record puts their season on life support, as teams with that record historically almost never make the playoffs. Time to start hoping for miracles.

Pretty sure a Republican would've went to prison for committing this crime too, especially in a NY court. I don't care where his treatment starts or when so long as its prior to release in the general public. Also that he registers as a sex offender after release because that's what he is.

We are in accord.

It should be happening now though, not after he gets out. Our Justice system is far too focused on punishment instead of rehabilitation.

Nope he deserves punishment AND rehabilitation, they aren't mutually exclusive. He was in a position of authority, actively lied about it after being confronted and has a pattern of behavior that has escalated into preying on minors. The judge factored all of this into his sentence and already noted his seeming compulsion, something that isn't even diagnosed by the way.

By all means, get him the help he needs but he also should be punished for his behavior. It was a just sentence by any measure.

I wasn't suggesting that he shouldn't do the time. What I was suggesting was that he rehab needed to start now while he's in prison, not after he gets out. Partly this was a comment on the process itself: he'll be more focused now in prison than after he gets out where there will be more distraction. Partly this was a comment on our justice system, which de-emphasizes rehab in general.

Merely pointing out the priorities and inequities of our criminal Justice system. As for Weiner getting help, I agree of course. It should be happening now though, not after he gets out. Our Justice system is far too focused on punishment instead of rehabilitation.
If Tony was a billionaire and had done this in a boardroom full of billionaires doing the same thing, he would still be sitting in a boardroom. The criminal justice system is wacked.

The Post-Antibiotic Era Is Here. Now What?

Now we die.

Thank you meat industry, and people that don't take the full course of antibiotics. You've doomed us all.

The first one, yes. The second part, eh, not so much. I mean, on the list of "Reasons why antibiotics have become utterly pointless", that's probably #527.

The meat industry and doctors prescribing anti-biotics for completely invalid reasons are 1 and 2.

But yeah, in any case, we're fucked. Let's hope we move quickly along the path to nanotechnology, because it'll literally be the only thing that can save us anymore.

Although I was being snarky about the dying part, I couldn't remember the potential "replacement" for antibiotics. Finally remembered just now: phages!

Now, faced with the looming spectre of antibiotic resistance, Western researchers and governments are giving phages a serious look. In March, the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases listed phage therapy as one of seven prongs in its plan to combat antibiotic resistance.

Brilliant protest at Capitol Hill today. The optics of dragging wheelchair bound protestors out by force does not cast the Congress in a good light.

Also, better send the army into Puerto Rico. The devastated island will be unable to cope for months. Does Trump even realize that PR is part of the US?

Why do you think he keeps tweeting about football instead? #looktheotherway
But he came to TX twice and his approval rating went up 0.0927%
This football thing is just feed for his booger eating base.

I don't know why you two keep trying to draw (creepy) parallels between those two things. There are a million other injustices in the world but I still want a dude texting a 15 year old his junk to be sitting in prison. So yeah the bankers are free and welp, that sucks. Still glad Weiner is in jail and I hope he gets some help when he gets out, dude has a serious compulsion.

What a day.

Truck at dealership cause the brakes went out (recall I was never notified about for master cylinder and brake boost), happened over the weekend.

Toilet replacement. 4? Trips to the hardware store. 1 of them not my fault, toilet had a chunk broken out of it.

Keep hoping the Giants lose. The longer they go without a win, the more likely they clean house. The more likely they clean house, the more likely they end up hiring a close friend of mine to come in and help fix it. Then I get box seats at games. I think we can all agree we want me to get that!
