Ultima Online Turns 20

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of Ultima Online, Richard "Lord British" Garriot's seminal MMORPG. We confirmed this in the Wikipedia after seeing a note about it on Rock, Paper, Shotgun. RPS has a good retrospective on this, pointing to a couple of other looks back, and recalling fun moments, like the time in the beta were Lord British as assassinated. I still recall my own glorious UO accomplishments. I think I killed a rat once, and amassed a pretty good cache of stale bread... I wonder if I could rejoin and reclaim my legacy?

Thanks for the heads up, that game looks fantastic. Been awhile since I've been excited by an MMO.

I was the leader of a Wheel of Time themed guild called Defenders of the Light, we were basically an anti-PK guild and would go around raiding known PK guild towns and along with a few other guilds including one called The Pluggers, were some of the baddest mofos on the Atlantic shard. Good times. Was in the beta, still have my cloth map too.

BTW if you are pining for a modern UO successor check out Legends of Aria (formerly known as Shards Online). It's looking really good and the final alpha is scheduled to start on the 28th: https://www.legendsofaria.com/final-alpha-coming-september-21st/

This video gives a pretty good intro of what to expect, at least as it was as of the previous alpha: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X94okE0Ma80

I played all three religiously so I'm sure we crossed paths at some point (and also came from BBS MUDs). I don't actually remember my moniker back then, well actually I guess I do since the names were so simple, but in any case...yeah, good times.

I got into the beta, but the game crashed immediately on start and I never got it to run. I was sooo hyped for it and got so disappointed that it turned me off of it forever.

In other news:

Richard Garriot is now a washout has-been and his recently backed MMO "Shroud of Avatar" is in the scam region for kickstarter projects. Lots of drama with that one. It's too bad, UO will be a memory till I die of good times to be had and I'm still hoping someone just takes basic UO, updates the graphics and netcode and releases it again.

This game helped put me through college. Sold UO real estate on Ebay, shit was amazing. Wrote a few bots in Visual Basic that were basically glorified click timers and would come back from class to reclaimed decayed properties.

I was a complete asshole DreadLord too, shit was so much fun. God the pre-Trammel/Felucca days were great. Anyone remember the invasions that would crash the servers? Good times. My favorite hangout on my alts was Trinsic, Britain was so overrated

Ahh, i do miss being a Dreadlord, terrorizing the countryside. PK'ing by day, Robbing Houses by night (thanks Mountain Dew!), then stashing it all on a tiny island only big enough for a house i randomly found when i stole someone's boat. That being the only way to actually keep your stuff safe. Eventually I had so many barrels and chests full of stuff that it fell through the elevated wooden floorboards. I guess it had some arbitrary high weight it could hold like 9999999 whatever then fell through. Spent a few days trying to collect it all through glitches in the sight system. Waking up, seeing what new exploits there were. Eventually pissing off enough people that a group of GreatLord's came after me one day when i was terrorizing a dungeon, well it didnt end well for them but I did run out of charges on my favorite PK wand (wands were so OP, no refresh time between casts or cast animations, as fast as you could point and click).

Before UO, I played a handful of BBS door MUDs, and then the MUDs Shadows of Yserbius and its sequels Twinion/Cawdor on The Imagination Network, Sierra Online's "connected theme park". I remember there being a Red Baron dogfighting game on there too, that I played a bit of.

I mostly played MUDs before UO. There was some Star Trek one I was fond of.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

Yeah, I still recall going from BBS' and Door games to MUDs to graphical MUDSs to MMOs. I probably still had the best times in MUDs. Small, tight communities, using your imagination, difficult as hell, a lot of attachment and sense of accomplishment.

It's amazing how Garriot let Ultima fall by the wayside.

To be fair, he's a pretty rich man with widely diverse interests and abilities. I can't really blame him for cashing out in '92. It's kinda like when your favorite band breaks up after 20 years... sorta of "well, that sucks... but it was a good run" type situation.

Dunno if you're following Portalarium but there are quite a few interesting aspects about it...

I remember being a part of the Diablo forum community and everyone was planning a mass exodus from the game when UO launched. Sure enough, most of the people I played with in 97 went to UO when it launched in the fall. I joined a pk guild with a few other people I PK'd with in Diablo and we got into it pretty hard. Made fanfiction, wrote twisted histories of our characters, etc etc

Running around with halberds in robes, stealing houses and ganking people. Good times.
