Op Ed

Why I deleted my Steam account - GamesIndustry.biz.
"This same approach of course applies to the Steam community, which technically has guidelines, but little interest in enforcing them. Hey, there's a guideline forbidding racism and discrimination, weird. I guess "Nazi Recruitment Group Order#1" (NSFW) with the swastika logo and 76 members has just fallen through the cracks for the last two years. And that user, "F*** Blacks," with a graphic avatar of a man fellating himself? I'm sure he just changed it and I just happened to visit the site in the split-second that was online before he was banned.

Nope, still there.

Oh, and this one, "Whites Only," (NSFW) a group "for any fellow White Supremacists, Neo-Nazis, and anyone who just hates colored people!" (If you must click through, be warned it only gets more racist from there.) Maybe nobody's noticed them. Oh wait, no, here's a post in the Steam help forums asking people to help ban the group for being racist. Well maybe Valve hasn't seen it. Oh, wait. There's a post from a Valve community mod locking the thread and linking to the support page on how to report abusive behavior."

Such tough boys, witty and clever, who never tire of memes like "triggered" and "snowflake", using them as if it's the first time they've been uttered, instead of the millionth time we've heard them. Creativity definitely suffers when you let others do your thinking for you. You speak as if saying something makes it true, but it's just the same moronic shit over and over and over... like regurgitated mantra. "Just words on the internet. What's the big deal? They don't bother ME. Snowflake! Libtard! SJW!" Such bad-asses! It isn't always about you, shitwits. And it's rarely as simple and inane as your pea brains are capable of parsing. Some of you must be very lonely little boys, or very lonely, angry, paranoid, delusional men. I knew of a couple of you, but I didn't realize so many of you were closet Nazis. Or, do you prefer "patriots"? lol Whatever... you can all fuck right off.

come on, do you really not see what you're doing? where is this avalanche of games you're getting buried under being jammed full of 'unnecessary females'? why does there need to be a criteria to justify any character being anything? that's dumb.

i remember when dontnod was pitching Life is Strange, nobody wanted to publish it unless the characters were switched to boys. this is the reality of videogames, not your nightmare dystopia where there are female and minority characters in the videogames that don't deserve to be!!

Video games are mainstream now, which means they're subject to mainstream sensibilities. We're never going back to a time when AAA titles are produced by 10 guys. It's another mass-media product, and has been for some time, which means it now carries all the baggage of our culture.

You might as well accept that, cause it's not going to ever go back.

They don't give a shit about anything but money. If the hate groups buys games, Valve is perfectly okay with them. Sad story, but there you have it.

I find it interesting how some negative posts about valve/steam have everyone shouting "hear hear!" and others have people going "what a crybaby."

I for one wont be deleting my account any time soon but I can see his point. You can be rude anywhere on the internet, this is true. Some places are ruder than others, and a lot of steam has become pretty much on the awful side. And you can't always just avoid it as it is surfaced in the reviews or in comments sections when you are trying to figure out if you should buy a game or not. That hurts the games, hurts steam as a whole, and surfaces the asshole gamers to people who may still be on the edge about how much they want to game at all. Toxic af.

Anyway... it looks like those groups mentioned in the article have been disabled. So the tantrum worked, to an extent.

Though I think the SS2 protag wasn't really anything, come to think of it. You literally didn't see the character, until someone hacked in a co-op mode, iirc. [I get the basic point... but still. I'm a nerd for that game >.>]

As for christians, I think if they didn't feel persecuted by 'other', then they'd rail against their own. Look how many variations there are, based on something as simple as interpretation.

Just don't get how libertarians and GamerGaters argue this. And, honestly, why does intent matter? If you call a kid the n word on Xbox Live, he doesn't have the ability to dive deep into your psyche and see if you're racist or not, he just knows you're calling him racist things.

they think they're pushing back against encroaching (((progressives))).

it really reminds me of the way american christians fuss like they're being persecuted by gays and atheists and use the pretense to keep "pushing back" with more and more christian sharia law; ban gay marriage, install religious monuments in government buildings, etc.

like, you guys are the majority. don't you get it?

General Rule #3
Abuse or encourage abuse of the Post Reporting System

That's why that was closed. Just report it, and move on.

People are going to be knobends, regardless of color or beliefs. The edgelord garbage from the two listed groups? Knobends.

While I don't support or condone their idiocy, they're paying money, just like anyone else. Unless they are outright harassing people with their stupidity, and they keep their toxicity in their own dank, dark little hole, let em.

You can't force them to evolve, and shaming doesn't really work.

1) I agree with most of his points...

2) ...but deleting his account was unnecessary and likely ineffective. He could just as easily just stop buying games from Steam and accomplish the same thing. The money he has already spent is gone. Might as well enjoy what he has.

3) We don't know that Valve doesn't report these groups or people to the FBI. For all we know the FBI lets them exist to track organizations and gather info. Gateway Computers broke a pedophile ring that way. An employee was running websites that sold child porn and even facilitated human trafficking. The FBI wanted this guy, but they wanted as much on him as possible so they could use him to break the whole thing wide open. My understanding is that letting him operate while unknowingly monitored was the difference between busting one guy and saving lives.

4) Now that I have put that positive spin on things I will also say that it's far more likely that Valve is just not interested in doing shit about shit. Never really has been and never really will. I would be beyond shocked if any part of #3 actually turned out to be true in even the smallest way. Valve's complete indifference to pure rubbish that is their forums is legendary at this point.
