Rune: Ragnarok Announced

Human Head Studios reveals plans for Rune: Ragnarok, a surprising follow up to Rune, an action/adventure released in the last millennium. Word is they are planning an open-world sandbox environment, and this website is online as home to the project, which does not yet carry a release date. The original was steeped in Norse mythology and melee combat, and while there was an expansion, a sequel never materialized before now. Here's the announce trailer, and here's word:
Human Head Studios has revealed Rune: Ragnarok, a sandbox, open-world RPG set in a dangerous Norse universe during the end of days. A highly anticipated follow-up to Rune, the team’s hit action-adventure game, Rune: Ragnarok places players in the middle of an epic battle where gods, beasts, and the last remaining humans struggle to survive.

By pledging allegiance to one of the Norse gods, players gain favor and special abilities to aid them as they raid enemy villages, fight the undead in brutal melee combat, sail to new lands, and craft powerful weapons to complete the goals of their god and conclude Ragnarok.

From Project Director Chris Rhinehart: “After seventeen years, we are thrilled to finally announce a new Rune game. In the spirit of the original, Rune: Ragnarok has intense and brutal combat in a world steeped in Norse mythology. We can’t wait to show you what we’ve created.”

Dont worry. I drowned ... because i was not thinking in three dimensions. There was a left and a right, an up and a LOT of down. Down is where you had to go. All the way down

For those who dont know, I was the person who created Rune Coop back in the day and the devs lent me some assistance with the mod. They are all a bunch a great guys. So glad Rune has finally been announced.

Remember playing that mod with a friend, kudos!

It wasn't a MP game you played seriously, it was just good, unbalanced fun. Chopping heads off & running from the person with the 2h-sword who was powered up. Flying across the arena, throwing shit at each other. It was just good fun.

Have the same memories. Fully agreed.

Enjoyed the SP a lot, too, though!

The best part of Rune wasn't it's single player experience (which was decent), but it's multiplayer. Well designed arenas with a wide variety of power ups to go after and weapons that each had their own unique attacks and special abilities.

Used to have a blast LAN'ing the game with friends. Our main game at the time was Quake 2, but between that (when some were taking a break or eating) we'd load up Rune and just have a blast.

The first game was released at the same time as Blade of Darkness (Severance). That game went under the radar to most. It was better than Rune in every way (graphics, physics, melee combat, at least).

I never managed to get into Rune because it was so greatly overshadowed by Severance.

Hrm, sweet, although I would have liked some in game footage in this trailer of actual gameplay.

I remember Rune back in the day, the multiplayer was easily the most infuriating game my group had ever played up to that point. Quite a few people rage quit and we had to agree to stop playing it together.

Something about automatic decapitation(instakill) when attacking from an elevated position, etc.

I knew the guys at HH were working on this. I know many of them personally. But I wasn't allowed to say anything.

For those who dont know, I was the person who created Rune Coop back in the day and the devs lent me some assistance with the mod. They are all a bunch a great guys. So glad Rune has finally been announced.

Rune Gold was a great release--it's still enjoyable and fun! But the "updated" Rune released a couple of years ago was such a small change from the original Gold release--that, well, I thought it was more of a mod to the original game than any sort of new release. I certainly hope they'll do a much better job with this--and I hope it's not strictly multiplayer because that lets me out. If it's not quality single play, it doesn't interest me these days...;) The original Rune has a marvelous single-play campaign.
It is well known universally that I do not make mistakes--so, if you should happen across an error in that which I have written, please be assured that *I* did not write it!...:)

I'd rather see a new Dune than Rune. Big open world Dune game would kickass! "We call that one, Mau-dib." "Shai Hulud."
