That's because you think realist work is more valuable because you think it is more technical.

Monetary value is not artistic value, art just gets more expensive because more people want to acquire it. Simple law of offer and demand. Think about that band you love, it may not top the charts but you love it anyway. Well art like a beauty is a subjective thing.
The difference is that buying music from a band doesn't change its monetary value because music can be replicated infinitely. And art is a market of rare objects, same process as buying collector items.

It can't be denied that the art market has become a place of speculation and big money. Many artists around the world is trying to make something unique and meaningful but very few have the chance of making the big bucks. Well good news one can buy good art for much cheaper, they just have to go out and look for it. Not everyone needs to buy from the Guggenheim.

And people do stuff to make the art they own more valuable, it is no surprise. If you run a place where you sell stuff you'll do things to make it more valuable. Better packaging, better advertising, decorating the boutique. Well an art gallerty is a place that sells stuff.
