Splash Damage and Wargaming Collaboration

Indie developer Splash Damage announces they're partnering with Wargaming "to enrich Wargaming’s portfolio with new gaming experiences." Here's word:

Splash Damage began its journey in game development as a mod team in the PC first-person shooter genre before creating their breakthrough hit Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. After being called upon to create multiplayer maps for Doom 3, the team used that game’s technology and design tools as building blocks for the acclaimed Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and its first multi-platform title, Brink, which further established Splash Damage as a triple-A game developer. Since then, they have worked on Batman: Arkham Origins multiplayer and the Gears of War franchises, along with their own creations like Dirty Bomb—the hit, independent free-to-play shooter on Steam.

WoT and WoWS are ok. Ive thrown about £100 at WoT over 5 years (at 10k games i'm guessing about a thousand hours) so not too much "money vs time investment". Who can forget RtCW and W:ET. Those two games gave me the best experiences from MP I ever have had, add a superb community to. Both Gray Matter Interactive/Nerve and Splash Damage knew how to make a living productive community, there all tools where free to use. So much fun! Wargaming are on the total opposite side... I say good luck!

Would kill for another Enemy Territory game. Honestly, I think those are probably my two favorite multiplayer shooters ever.

Always. There's also just something good about that feeling of ownership of a non-f2p title. I get way more out of such games than I ever have a f2p game.

I think his point is more that Wargaming is not who you pair up with if you want to make a top tier game. Dirty Bomb wasn't bad, it wasn't great, but it was above average. It had a long way to go though and I don't really trust wargaming at all.

I've put a fair bit of time into World of Warships. It was a lot of fun. Just as it started to get grind, I felt like I'd gotten what I wanted out of it. 40 or so hours of free gaming is not a bad thing.

Still I get your point: a good standalone game is much preferred over free to play.

While W:ET and Quake Wars we're both tons of fun, Brink was just awful. Is Dirty Bomb even worse than Brink?

Dirty Bomb still turned out to be a good game though. It just needs more work (mainly bug fixing and additional content). A bit silly that it's still in beta after so many years, but that beta tag is unfortunately still warranted.

The concept was ok, their execution is where they failed at producing a successor to Quake Wars. The microtransaction-grind of Dirty Bomb doomed it from the get go in trying to compete directly with Team Fortress 2.
