Okay, I gotta ask... what were her arguments for it?

The dryer sends a push notification when the laundry is done. VERY IMPORTANT.

That's exactly what it does (the washer too) and one of the reasons she wants it. Let's you see in real time what temperature it is drying at and the progress. Or to put another way, something completely pointless. Or rather, something that will break down and not be easy/cheap to fix.
She'll check if the first three times she dries clothes, and then never again. Meanwhile, your dryer gets hacked and starts serving kiddie pr0n.

I would have appreciated notifications, and user IDs, back when I was in college and people would just leave their clothes in one of the two shared washer/dryers on our dorm floor. But I guess IoT devices on a campus would be some of the first to be hacked.

Well IoT could be a positive in infrastructure. Take lights on streets, tunnels, etc. If they're faulty or dying they can let it be known they need to be replaced which can happen sooner than later. Does it have to be everything? Obviously not that's silly but there are aspects of it that could be a benefit.

Wife wants a smart-phone connected washer/dryer. I'd argue with her, but imagine that's how people felt when TV remotes came out. Someone is going to hack my dryer and burn my house down.
