Grand Theft Auto Reviews Crash; GTA Online Cheat Killed

The reviews on Steam for Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V have taken a turn for the worse following the recent shutdown of the OpenIV modding tool for Grand Theft Auto V (thanks DSOGaming). The overall rating for each game has dropped to "mixed" as the recent reviews GTAIV are "mostly negative" and the recent reviews for GTAV are now "overwhelmingly negative" as gamers express their anger at the mod shutdown. In semi-related news, PCGamesN notes the shutdown of Force Hax, a paid mod that allowed users to cheat and mess with other players in Grand Theft Auto Online. The mod website now has the following statement:
“After discussions with Take-Two Interactive, effective immediately we are ceasing all maintenance, development and distribution of the Force Hax cheat menu services. We will be donating our proceeds to charity and we apologize for any and all problems Force Hax services have caused to the Grand Theft Auto Online community.”

Gotta keep people playing the online mode so they can keep selling them Shark Cards! Can't do that if cheaters chase people off I suppose.

Miss the days of single-player GTA.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

So you're against gamers voicing their discontent when a developer kills mods in order to juice more money out of the customers? You like all these microtransactions and day one DLC bs? Because it happened when gamers didn't say anything. Who cares if Rockstar puts their game on PC or not. We've got infinite good games to play, we don't need to bend over for them.

They're for telling people your opinion of the game. This type of pointless nonsense (along with the retarded memes and other jokes so often voted "most helpful") is why a lot of people don't bother reading Steam reviews at all.

Disabling a single player mod is lame but I see absolutely nothing wrong with disabling a multiplayer cheat. There was always a tension between the P2P netcode and their business model of selling cards. I would have preferred they resolved it by moving to dedicated servers but that's probably too much to ask for. Gamers can be awfully petulant and self-entitled but they are also weak-willed. Wake me up when gamers successfully boycott a Rockstar title in response.

This is one of the reasons I only buy and play (and mod!) single-player games. One of the reasons--there are many more, but I despise the neo-copy protections that some companies are attempting to integrate into even single-player game design--like how single-player Diablo III was ruined by designing key game elements forced to interact with their online servers else the game wouldn't *run*--so that offline mode was killed off even for single play. Then they put in the idiotic *online* auction house ideas, and killed it again. Never bought it--never will, and that's why.

OTOH, just reinstalled the venerable Diablo II--again, for the umpteenth-thousandth time since I bought it in a.d. 1999/2000!...;) Still enjoying the game--*and* the mods, and getting my money's worth! Too bad, Blizzard--I know you must hate it...;)

Blizzard says privately, "It's not fair--it's just not right!--That people should buy our software at full pop on release, at the price we asked, and then use it in perpetuity! Not fair--and we are going to work to make that impossible from now on! And mods? Are they insane? We are going to stomp on that with both feet!"

EA is horrible about that--then there's the last Sim City which arrived DOA because of stupid, online-only single-play mode in which the EA servers were again used as a part of the game's single-play design. What a transparent dodge--it's copy-protection, pure and simple. It also is something I simply won't buy. Ever.

I'm sure Blue's readers could add much more. The bottom line is that when I legally purchase a copy of any game, then so long as I don't copy it-and-sell-the-copy, violating copyright, I can do whatever it is I choose to do with the copy. I can mod it prodigiously, I can fold it, staple it, mutilate it, trash it, play it for thirty years, *even *sell it* if I want--because that copy is *mine.* I bought it and paid for it--the original publisher/developer sold those rights to me when he sold me the copy. Companies like Blizzard are going to find contrary attitudes on their parts will cost them far more than it's worth, imo.
It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)

I knew this was coming. Normally I'd agree, just not in this case. Too much drama -- way too much drama! -- for what the dev did. GTA5 is insanely good on so many levels, even people who don't like the game can't possibly disagree with that. I say this and I am not even remotely a fan of the game. And what happened now? They removed their mod support or w/e and the game is now marked as Overwhelmingly Bad on the #1 marketplace for PC games. Fucking hilarious.

I thought that GTA V was mediocre. Huge step back in simulation quality from 4 and I haaaaate the multiple character implementation for various gameplay reasons. Edit: Yes, a ton of features are crazy advanced and there's lots to do, but I just didn't have much fun with it. I liked Watch Dogs 1 better.
Also, the modding tool Rockstar banned was only for single player mods. You couldn't use it in multiplayer. Anyway, that was my understanding from the videos I saw about it. So Rockstar's excuse of stopping cheating was a lie.
The thing with GTA 5 PC is that a ton of people bought it FOR the mods. Many bought it for the third time! I think it's perfectly fine for people to lower the rating of a game if an aspect of it is negative, which is the case here, the publisher is doing a bad job of supporting it. It doesn't make steam reviews useless, it makes them incredibly useful. You have to read them though, I know it's hard.
Please don't take this as me telling you your opinion is stupid. I just love games and want people involved and want publishers to stop squeezing us for every penny at the cost of the quality of games and the gaming experience.

Banning the online cheat tools is fine, but shutting down the
OPEN4 community is bullshit since the team took pains to ensure that the mods produced with them were strictly for singleplayer.

As far as the review spam goes, I'm of two minds on it. On the one hand I think it's great that gamers have found a way to unify in voicing their displeasure at a publisher for making a dick move. Unlike with Gamersgate no one is getting hurt by this. On the other hand, the downvotes are also affecting a good game by a good developer. Rockstar has always been supportive of the modding community and now they are being punished over something over which they have no control. This is Take2's dick move, not Rockstar's.

I took it the right way, don't worry =) Like you I also thought GTAV was mediocre, but I meant that it was absolutely amazing on a technical level.

You have a good point, people bought it for the 3rd time for those reasons you mentioned. I really don't get Rockstar. They don't really have a face to me -- I can't picture the people behind Rockstar. All I'm seeing is an arrogant AF company who treat the PC like it's that fat kid at the party who can't stfu about wanting candy, so they end up giving that kid candy last while also fucking hating the kid in the process.

Still... I'd want RDR2 for PC. I'd sell a part of my gamer integrity for it, I hate to admit. It's why I hate seeing GTAV's rating go down like this because of the entitled PC community.

I find the whole thing rather comical - it's not like there's people actually buying GTAV at this point anyway. Might as well be posting angry online reviews about Super Mario Brothers. Either you already own it, or you're highly unlikely to buy it (unless they're hoping to spike some sort of Steam Summer Sale thing, in which case, most of those people already know if they want something and how much they'll pay for it...)

Someone had better tell Steam because GTA5 makes the top 10 list frequently.

Why do you care? A customer can rate a product anyway and anytime he or she wants or feels like, it isn't dependent on your approval.... and if you piss off your customers who pay the price. Just ask Top Ware and Two Worlds 2

What I find more surprising is that Take 2 thinks this will make OpenIV disappear, because a cursory glance showed me 3 active mirrors of the latest OpenIV version.... and those won't ever be taken down easily...

Agreed. People like to use Steam reviews to voice their political opinions, resulting in good games getting bad reviews for reasons that have nothing to do with the games themselves.

Also, Steam reviews generally account for less than 5% of a game's total player base and negative reviews tend to be less than 1%. It's the very definition of "vocal minority." GTAV has already sold over 7 million copies on Steam alone and the vast majority of those customers don't use mods.
