Out of the Blue

Happy Father's Day! If your pop is still around, don't forget to give him a call. And to all you dads out there, here's hoping you got your breakfast in bed, and that someone else mows the lawn today. The Gunnar-man hasn't given me anything yet, but I know how he loves surprises, and if nothing else, his affection is more than enough for me to know he thinks I'm a good doggie daddy. Woof.

R.I.P.: Stephen Furst, Flounder in 'Animal House,' dies.

Links: Thanks Ant and Acleacius.
Play: Stellar Squad.
Stories: Steven Furstís role on Babylon 5 was a remarkable example of a sci-fi sidekick.
Media: Just Add Water - A Really Great Big Story.
Submerged inside a 6ft Water Balloon - The Slow Mo Guys 4K. Thanks Hypothermia.
The Happiest Girl. Thanks Kxmode.

Animal House is a culturally significant timeless comedy.
Catch it sometime, you won't be disappointed.

Listen I enjoyed Animal House when I first saw it as much as anyone and I agree it is a cultural icon of film. However, I don't think I could call it "timeless". Have you seen it within, oh I don't know, the last 20 years? It isn't the worst example of it, but overall it hasn't aged well.
I have watched the movie multiple times in the last 20 years. I don't enjoy all low-brow guy humor, but this movie did it right.

RIP, Vir.
feel a need to dust off the old dvds and watch a few episodes/re read a book or 2. and yes, everyone remembers that particular scene, and its followup, 2 years or so later, when he did wave

I've found that terrible movies tend to age better because your expectations don't get bloated up by years or decades of nostalgia built up by not actually watching it.

Indeed. Huge cultural significance, but no longer watchable. I didn't see it until around 2003 or so, whenever the Double Secret Probation DVD came out.

It was not a good experience. By that point, so many movies had shamelessly ripped it off. Movies, and TV shows. I feel like damn near every animated show has their own spoof, with Futurama probably doing it best, but so many movies took its formulas and, well, shamelessly ripped it off. But, by standing on its shoulders, they also advanced everything.

By the time I watched it, it was just tame and predictable. No fault of its own, it's because of all the other media that did what it did, but it isn't hard to do it better when you're already starting with the blueprint. Which may make Animal House important, but it also makes it a very boring, predictable, tame movie to see out of the original context.

you can say the same exact thing about "Godfather"... because its just as true

It's sad... so many of the main cast of Babylon 5 have passed already.

You're not missing anything. It's one of those movies that you're told "YOU TOTALLY HAVE TO WATCH IT BECAUSE IT'S SOOO FUNNY" and then you watch it and realize the world, culture, and society have moved on since then and what you're watching is a bunch of people acting like assholes.

RIP Moon Faced Assassin of Joy.

if hearing about vir has awakened a need to rewatch b5, you can stream it for free at https://www.go90.com/

no it's not a pirate site, it's run by one of the phone carriers as a promo, so totally legit. don't even have to sign up for anything.
Thanks for the link.

Reminds me of something a buddy from my USAF days used to say -- being from Missouri when asked about kids he'd say, "Hell, you throw a stone in most any schoolyard in Missouri you'll probably hit one of my kids."

Best wishes to all the Dads out there!

Dad's been gone for many years and I don't have any kids (that I know of.) But maybe my cat will bring me a dead animal.

As I said in the other thread, the B5 cast has been really hard hit.
