John Guthrie Leaves Valve?

A post on NeoGAF notes that designer John Guthrie is no longer listed on Valve's "Our People" page (thanks RedEye9). They confirm this is an anomaly by pointing to an archive of that same page from 10 days ago where his bio is still listed. Oddly, that page has many historical listings for former employees, but Guthrie's bio is gone altogether. We tried to contact him to confirm this but have so far failed. John is an old-time friend of this site from the earliest days of the Quake community when he and cohort Steve Bond ran the site Quake Command under the handles Choryoth and Wedge. Unfortunately we've fallen out of touch over the years, something I can partially blame on John in a very meta way, as he was the one who first made me realize the efficiency found by not answering emails. John helped make both Half-Life games and both Portals, so if he's moved on, we offer him our thanks for his work on some of our all-time favorites. ValveTime tweets the news that John has left is confirmed, but doesn't say how. We also noticed that Steve Bond isn't listed on that Valve page either, and the last version of the page in the wayback machine listing Bond is from August 4 2012. This led us to discover this post saying Steve left Valve in 2010, so presuming that's correct, we're just seven years late in catching up. And a funny note in conclusion is that John Guthrie's Combine OverWiki entry is updated to reflect this news, and it looking that over we see that based on a logo he created for us, they say: "Before joining Valve, he helped design the website 'Blue's News'."

@Dev: True, good point(s).

@RedEye9: Good/funny videos. Sad but true......

But heck, maybe we'll all be surprised when they announce Half Life 3, Portal 3, and Left 4 Dead Again!

Hmmmmmm, this exodus has me wondering two things:

1) They've wrapped up the writing, design, etc. of some major forthcoming titles, and from there Valve will just concentrate on the cash cow (Steam) and no longer develop games.

- or -

2) Valve decided to quietly walk away from developing/releasing games and let the cash cow (Steam) roll in the money, which forced all these talented people to say, "F this, if you're not in the business of making great games anymore, we're out of here!"

Sad, I wonder if 'The Freeman' will ever show his face again.

or 3) Most of them are middle aged and have $$$ banked, they can afford to just dote on the grand kids.

As for freeman, here he is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtjeYPHwFBg it's not the one I was looking for but you get the point

DOH, found the one I was looking for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2NKOjYOuGQ

There is no "valve decided" you speak as if everyone is under a central direction. Valve has a flat management structure, no one is in charge of anything, they just wheel desks over to what sounds interesting.

Sadly, this is not at all good for getting games out. But it's fun to work there I'm sure!

IMHO, they need to subcontract out game development to a 3rd party to get the stuff done if they aren't going to bother.

John Guthrie got too close to Fat Gabe while he was eating a ham sandwich and accidentally got devoured. RIP

And with how profitable tf2/csgo are in the market and how wildly popular portal is they're basically a guaranteed a remake as well.

Remakes don't really need designers and writers, maybe artists to make higher resolution models and textures but that's it...

There will come a day when the last hat has been designed.
There will come a day when the last backstory to a hat has been written.
There will come a day when the last game designer has left Valve.

This will be the day. The day when Valve is no more and all that is left is the vage form of the cadaver of a formerly brilliant game company in the mist. Or is it not mist but Steam?

Yeah, pretty sad.....Valve now only needs people from foreign countries to pretend to answer tech support questions & count their money rolling in from steam fees to every transaction anymore, no need for actual developers , designers or the like....

I am in the camp that firmly believes a new "orange" box is coming. Source 2 (the new source engine) is available for developers, there have been leaks of dev plans referencing a new Left4Dead, a (or a couple?) of leaked screenshots of a l4d2 level apparently redone to showcase Source 2, and it is what valve did to launch the Source engine... released a bunch of Showcase games. And with how profitable tf2/csgo are in the market and how wildly popular portal is they're basically a guaranteed a remake as well.

I've had this though since last year when the Source 2 leaks started.

Then there is Gabe confirming, this year, that Valve is working on singleplayer games.

Successfully shipped titles look better on a resume than time sitting at a desk playing Solitaire, and are probably more psychologically rewarding too.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

Been reading Blue's since before I was daydreaming of how f'n amazing it will be to have two Voodoo 2's running Quake 2 once they're released.

Valve got to be where they're at by following their own successes down some (fiscally) wise paths. And as much as I wish their focus had remained more on game development (ESPECIALLY, YOU KNOW, THAT HALF-LIFE THING THEY CAME UP WITH), it's not hard to see how they got here.

A new Valve will emerge some day. I just wouldn't mind if it was sooner rather than later...

...oh wait, those Witcher guys. nm, we're good

Actually, all those who've left probably just want to make games and it's really not happening at Valve these last years.

Hey look on the bright side, you found the long lost website designer.

credit where credit is due, I saw it posted by JeffMOD on https://forums.blackmesasource.com/ forums. I did not include that in the submission.
