I'm not sure why anyone would crowdfund an MMO. MMOs are very expensive to make. No amount of crowdfunding will be enough to completely fund an MMO's development or upkeep. $11 million is nothing. The average AAA game costs at least $40 million and that's just for a 10 hour single-player campaign.

Yeah, but the KS wasn't about an MMO. This "downgrade" has been gifted to backers out of nowhere.

And indeed, for $11m -fees you aren't gonna make a MMO which is why the original KS was for a SP game!

This gives you some idea why people are REALLY sour on this one.

When I backed this game on KS it was going to be a single-player RPG. Then it morphed into a pseudo-MMO with a huge, bloated cash shop and virtual goods rivaling Star Citizen in price. As the game "developed" the virtual goods just got more and more outrageous in price. They've spent so much time on milking people via the cash shop that could have been spent on developing the core game. Right now, the game is nowhere near ready for launch in its current state.

I also backed this, but I dont ever recall the game not being MP. I backed it because it was going to have Coop.

But after backing it and then seeing what they released. I have always regretted backing this game. Its been such a disappointment. the game play and graphics just sucks to no end.

I reinstall the game ever y so often and load it up hoping that something has finally changed, that its gotten better but my hopes are always smashed.

To be honest about Tabula, that was a pretty good game, but after they went in and changed the game with that one patch that screwed up the weapons. It sucked from that point on. I was surprised they didn't resurrect this game with a free to play model. It may have survived if they did that.

I still own an unopened special collectors edition box of Tabula Rasa that went under right after I bought it..... so no, I don't believe this guy nor have faith he'll stick around to keep anything running anymore.

On November 11, 2008, Richard Garriott announced in an open letter to the players of Tabula Rasa that he was leaving NC Soft (the publisher of the game) to pursue other endeavors.

What "actually " happen.......

Blue, you cut the title off too early:

Richard Garriott Reassures Shroud Of The Avatar Backers About Their $11 Million Going to Build the New Wing of his Castle.

To be fair, Garriott did sell Brittania Manor back in 2014. And His other Austin property where he was going to build is currently on the market.

Fair enough. But given how he's treated both the game and his backers he may as well have built a new wing on his castle.

that was a cool game with interesting mechanics and scifi. something we need more of imo.

i played it a bit but couldnt really get into a new game at that time. it still made decent money and there was no reason for it to close.

just like city of heroes. Games getting canned because they are only making a few million a year instead of bazillions so lets kill them.

the curse of modern game production.

Yea tho the game went down fast because Richard garriott left the earth for his spacetrip and forgot all about the game ...but hey he got the money..soo it's hard to believe him now

Well, when he first announced it, it wasn't going to be a fucking MMO. It was going to be a single player "ultima-style" RPG.

But then the mp aspect started growing, and then he realized imbeciles will just pay $500 for houses in a fucking game, and there, now, is Shroud of the Avatar. :\

He saw how much Chris Roberts was bilking people for Star Citizen and got greedy. I wonder how much of the almost $11 million went into developing SotA's store? It rivals Star Citizen's with all of the extra virtual goods you can "buy". Also, remember the cross-promotion they had going with Star Citizen? Garriott and Roberts know how to play people for suckers, that's for sure.

11 million bucks blown in 4 years for a project that's still pre-alpha. Uh yeah. And throw another massive KS failure on the fire. That's why you don't give assholes with money more money. Garriot can drop $25 million bucks to go to space but he can't deliver a game in 4 years and 11 million bucks gone? If it was his money he was risking it would have been done on time and on budget you cam bet.

Released later this year? Wtf? It's literally not even a game yet. Just a collection of mechanics.
