Old Steam Forums Closing

Valve is transitioning away from its old forums to their newer Steam Community Discussions (thanks Rhialto). This post explains they are allowing about a week to save or migrate any of the thousands of posts they will be deleting in about a week:
Yesterday these forums went down, and we quickly heard from many of you that you wished there had been some warning so you could save off or archive some of the content here.

You were right that we failed by not communicating that the forums would go down and giving you a chance to save off content. As such, we’ve now restored access to the forums, but we won’t be able to continue to support them long term. They will go down permanently on June 5th, 2017. We encourage you to save off any posts or content that you find valuable in that timeframe or to migrate them to Steam Community Discussions.

Yep, a text database history just takes so much money to keep around.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with that and more to do with creating a clean slate for developers and publishers with games that have been skewered on their forums. Sean Murray is going to be happy... I guess.

I mean, you don't actually believe that, right? Steam reviews, which I'd imagine are used literally infinitely more to determine whether to buy a game or not, still exist.

The forums were more used for "I'm stuck here" or "what strategy is best" or "has anyone else encountered this error message?," things that sadly should still be around.

But why taking them down permanently? When there is no cost of moderating them, only preserving the data (which takes marginal resources, I'm sure), why take down hundreds of thousands of posts, some of which can be dear to their creators? It costs close to nothing to you. Why not leave the history accessible?

They have to do this because Storage is sooooo expensive, especially cold storage. It was literally killing Valve preventing them from freeing up enough resources to work on HL3.

This is something I would never be able to understand, let alone when it comes to huge, profitable companies like Valve.
You don't want to keep moderating and maintaining the old-school forums? Takes more resources than it's worth for you? That's absolutely fine. I can understand CLOSING the forums, so no new messages can be posted, but all of the history is still there, still online. Nothing wrong with that.

But why taking them down permanently? When there is no cost of moderating them, only preserving the data (which takes marginal resources, I'm sure), why take down hundreds of thousands of posts, some of which can be dear to their creators? It costs close to nothing to you. Why not leave the history accessible?

Just the good old forums like we are used to with more options and text formatting, etc. A topic I kept following with 1750+ pages. I can't imagine that on newer forum they use because they are not as pratical.

LOL you're talking about gabe newell, the man who trojan horsed his way to a billion dollar steam store by basically stealing game ownership of half-life / CS by inserting DRM into it to get an "instant market" for his big plan to sell games and spy on his own customers by forcing drm crapware into every fucking game.

The man is a fucking menace not some savior of gaming, valve was always fucking evil and the drm into half-life proved it. Gabe newell was a former microsoft executive who's motto was "extend, embrace, extinguish"

Half-Life 2 and CS:S don't use the Steamworks DRM.

It should be enough time to put together a scraper.

I didn't even know - or forgot - that these other forums existed. Seems like a nicer community than the "community discussions" I'm used to. It can't cost much to keep them running, but I can understand the desire to consolidate and stop maintaining it. Even some of the people who are upset about it going down haven't visited in months.

Time to let it go. Hopefully twitter is next.

When you have everything, and can do everything. What do you do for fun? Hookers? Blow? What happens when that gets boring? Do you play power games with the poor? Do you write cheques to crazy political activists? Terrorists? Do you kill for fun? Rape?

I've always wondered what it would mean to be a billionaire. I can't imagine it really. I assume most of them are normal, or as normal as it is possible to be in those circumstances. But Im reasonably sure they are not like you or I. Not even close.

Forbes assessment of GabeN's net worth

Notice how there are years of no changes, and then a huge jump? Yeah, being a private company means you don't have to disclose shiiiiiit. These are just some tidbits that Forbes has been able to add up, it's far from the complete picture.

But whatever, in Trump's America, billionaires are the new working-class everyday honest joe six-packs. They're just like you and me! Remember Mitt Romney eating "grits" for the first time? Man, it's like those northern elite plutocrats are just like y'all, yee haw!

Deleting them? What a lack of forethought...

If they restored them, they clearly were not deleted. They either had a backup or they only removed access.

I would agree it was the wrong move, but "deleting" is also the wrong way to describe it.

It's a shame they only make like five billion dollars a year off Steam, otherwise they might have been able to afford just transferring the data over to their new site, rather than deleting all of it.

But that would seem like customer service, and apparently Gabe & Co are deathly fucking allergic to that concept.

After all Valve operates on a shoestring budget.

That seems to be the case. Come on now, you don't get to be a trillionaire by writing cheques!
