I don't think modern historians acknowledge a dark age, in the sense of a benighted period of massive decline where people lived in ignorance and poverty, at all.
its not regarded as starkly as it used to be, but there is still a recognized period of cultural, economic and technical stagnation in the middle ages which corresponds exactly to the conquests im describing
to say there was no recognized issues "at all" is grossly overstating the modern views
while the widespread plagues played a big part as well, they were arguably caused by these very circumstances themselves
at any rate, you cant deny the massive impact of the muslim invasions in this period.. and you cant whitewash it all away with some kind of bullshit "everyone has problems" ambiguity
im definitely no christian apologist - but i dont see a point in denying the facts on record either

I don't think this matters much. People don't need a religion to go persecuting and conquering, and religion isn't going to stop them doing it, either. You can look at any indigenous minority, anywhere and from any time, and see how well any religion or philosophy has ever held back the majority from taking what they wanted. When you get a few million people, hundreds of years of religious development hasn't done much to change what they want.
you dont think the Roman Papal legacy mattered much? you dont think the widespread institution of Christianity had any meaningful part in the political machinations of the middle ages and beyond? you dont think massive fortunes were moved and leveraged at their whim? give me a fucking break, man... thats the most clueless thing ive heard in a while
