Grim Dawn Sells 1M Copies

Crate Entertainment announces Grim Dawn has now sold more than one million copies since the release of this crowdfunded action/RPG for Windows. Calling this an "epic milestone," they have put the game on sale to celebrate, and note that they are almost finished with the game's expansion:
We at Crate Entertainment are thrilled to announce that Grim Dawn has now sold over one million copies on PC, plus over 200k copies of the Crucible arena mode DLC!

In celebration of this epic milestone, we’ve marked Grim Dawn 50% off through our website until the end of May. It is also currently 50% off through Humble Store, during their spring encore sale!

It’s crazy to think that this success story somehow arose from such humble and uncertain beginnings, overcoming so many setbacks and challenges. I repeatedly questioned what I was doing those first three, hard years of development. Looking back, I think the only thing that kept me going on the bad days, was the responsibility I felt to see it through, for the people who had invested time in the project and those who supported us early on through our website. Even with that drive to see it through, no matter my doubts, the later support of thousands more backers on Kickstarter and Early Access, validated what we were doing and gave us a real shot at making the dream a reality.

It was still a long road and lot of sweat and tears, from the 2012 Kickstarter to our 2016 release but I had the great fortune to find amazing teammates who made that journey a lot easier and the game much better than it could have been otherwise. Much thanks must also go to my long-time friends “Rhis,” “Jmack” and Brian Parnell (now working on his own project Praey for the Gods) – without their early help; Grim Dawn may have never got off the ground.

Since the release of Grim Dawn, the Crate team has grown to 14 developers. We’re now working to finish up the Grim Dawn expansion and, because we can never seem to make things easy on ourselves, we’ve started some other projects as well.

We’re looking forward to getting the Grim Dawn expansion into the hands of fans and we can’t wait to share news about our future projects. Until then, keep perfecting your builds, collecting those crafting mats, making morally questionable quest choices and remember it’s not healthy to spend too much time in the void!

...Oh and try not to piss off any gods (or do?), keep away from Loxmere and don’t eat too many untouched meals – who knows where they’ve been!

Sincerely,

Arthur and the Crate Team

Great game, been replaying it recently continuing with a character into Ultimate difficulty.

Fortunately this doesn't have any of that nonsense from the old Diablo games where things suddenly get multiple immunities making them impossible to kill.

Though the limited stash storage is unforgivable and always will be for such a game and trying to get money/iron is way to slow. Still loads of fun and thankfully there are apps to give you more stash storage (though should never have been needed to be created and a pain compared to a game handling it itself).

I expected nothing less from the creators of Titan Quest, one of the very best ARPG series until now.

TQ was one of the worst selling games in THQ's history, it was not as good as grim dawn. I wasn't a big fan of TQ, it's quality was all over the map story wise. The art was nice in certain places but the combat left a lot to be desired.

TQ was also thoroughly screwed with by THQ management during development. It was beyond ridiculous. Amazing they managed to sneak a decent game past them at the time.

Meh. Not sure what the fuss is about.

All the skills seemed like they were copied and pasted across heroes, just with different animations. Some abilities sounded great, but were completely useless. Others were great at level 1, but scaled terribly at higher levels.

The game gave the impression of having a lot of depth, but was actually rather shallow..and the gameplay was rather repetitive and felt like a grind.

At least it had co-op.

Titan quest was far superior IMO.

That's fair, the vanilla Titan Quest was kind of very bland. But TQ plus its expansion Immortal Throne was FANTASTIC (I think this is what most people are remembering when they say 'Titan Quest').

With over 300 hours logged it's safe to say I really like this game. Incidentally I've been trying to focus on Diablo 3 for the last little while since we finally got our first season on consoles but all it does is make me want to play Grim Dawn.

However I must admit there's one aspect of GD's world that does frustrate me.

As an older gamer I'm used to exploring all the nooks and crannies in any particular area. And in GD there are at least 2 spots that look like they could possibly lead to a hidden area but are literal dead ends. These are spots where a little trail / corridor branches off from the main area with nasty green / aether damage on the floor (which seems to cause damage as a % / tic rather than X amount / tic. So even with full resistance you'll die relatively quickly.

This is especially frustrating when you consider the game also features 'off the map' loot rooms.

It's the only time I've ever used a hex editor to revive a HC character. Dying from a tough battle? I'll accept that. Dying from questionable map design in the last overworld area? No.

Cannot wait for the expansion.

I remember crowdfunding this directly off the Crate website in March 2012. This (and POE as another instance) is why I think KS/crowdfunding, for all it's problems, is still a valuable thing to have, particularly when you look at the farce D3 was.

As a fan of all three recent major ARPGs (D3, PoE, GD), I appreciate what each brings to the table/genre...

And I'm looking forward to the expansion... Which I hope/expect has new content along with the two new classes, and I'm eager to check out each (though also worried they'll be badly balanced initially, making later nerfs/buffs more painful).

I could never understand this balancing bullshit in PvE games with no PvP. Blizzard likes to go on about it in Diablo3, it's total bullshit. Either a class works or it doesnt. Talk about buffs and nerfs in PvE games with increasing difficulty curves is just fluff for poorly designed games.

That was the primary reason I left D3. The constant re-shuffling of the classes, one patch this toon is the uber class, the next patch this toon is. And on top of that making all current gear obsolete in the prcoess. I just got so sick and tied of that bullshit.

The fact is and Blizz fails to understand it or they just dont give a damn, is that all classes should be balanced the same, one class should never be doing millions of damg per crit hit where as another toon cant and is mostly being setup as a support toon.

Blizz turned D3 into a fricking MMO wanna be. its a fricking disgrace to the franchise how they lobotomized this once beloved game.

I expected nothing less from the creators of Titan Quest, one of the very best ARPG series until now. Grim Dawn is really good too, i had a really good time in there both solo and with friends. Lots of very technical aspects, some dungeons will really have you drop a sweat, difficulty is brutal but fair. That's this fairness that makes one want to go further and try harder.
My steam counter says 230 hours played, i think i can add quite a few once the expansion with new act comes out...
Really happy that did sell well so Crate can continue and delight us with more ARPG goodness

Excellent, congratulations to Crate Entertainment!

I can't wait for the expansion to come out, I'm sure the new zones will look awesome. Their art team really started to get their act together in the later zones, and they're still slowly revamping the early alpha/beta era zones.

As far as loot, yeah, Grim Dawn is definitely a lower default drop rate than D3, of course. Legendaries(Purple) don't even start dropping until your character is level 50, or from the last boss quest in the game in normal. Drop rates do increase in Elite and Ultimate difficulty, as well as Veteran(modifier for Normal) for that matter, but you will never be drowning in Legendaries like D3.

I've got around 450 hours into Grim Dawn according to Steam, but quite a bit of that was in the earlier level capped beta days. I'm still finding blue or purple drops that make me want to build an entire character around them though...right now I have around 7 characters in the 50s or higher because of that.

People on the forums say the legendary drop rate over time is better playing the Crucible(arena) mode, but that kinda bores me. The main game's quest chains and maps are more fun to me, and even solo you will eventually get leveled up and outfitted in good greens, blues and some purple Legendaries.

while I sort of like the game, and I haven't finished it yet, it feels a bit like d3 when it first came out ie 99.9% of all the lootdrops are useless and you get to the point where the game gets needlesly difficult because you get nothing usefull to wear.

I played only a few hours till the first boss, the warden or something.

I'm guessing I'm missing lots of the proper gameplay. Maybe I'll give it a shot again.

Great ARPG, hands down.

The expansion has me super hyped as well.

Between PoE and Grim Dawn, Blizzard should be ashamed at the state of D3's continual growth (ie: stuff they are adding or expanding upon)

Seriously, way to go Crate, great job. When I need my ARPG fix, this is where I get it.

This game is so much better and a far superior game to Bilbo 3.

The settings and the environments are so much better looking and unique. unlike Bilbo 3s where they rehash the shit out or each area and dungeon setting.

Plus the story is better too and looks 10 times better.

Arthur is a really nice guy and actually listens to what the community has to say.

During the early Alpha of the game, I was the one who actually suggested to him that they add the move button to the game and he added it. I really appreciated that. one of the best features ever for these types of games.
