Why would Netflix care? They want their app spread around freely. It requires a paid account to use.

Because if you're using a rooted device, it's a lot easier to get around Netflix's DRM and record content from it to distribute on torrents later. Of course, it's not like this isn't already being done anyway.

Right, which is why it's being driven by the studios. I don't think Netflix cares all that much.

More importantly, why would any developer want to impair a potential customer from using their app? It makes no sense whatsoever

Because there are so many Android devices out there, it's not feasible to support all of them equally well. If you know there's a problem with a specific device, but that it's not financially viable to try to fix it, it's far better to block that device's users from installing your app, than it is to just let them install it, encounter nasty bugs/performance issues, and then write a hate review on the Play Store, throwing off your customer rating metrics.

Haven't you read the article? Its not about preventing bugs, its about DRM.

Studios and distributors. Perhaps partly to do with piracy risk but I'm thinking very much due to regional restrictions. It's very important to the industry structure to be able to control distribution rights and region-locking is integral to that. Region-locking by where you're connecting to the internet from means you can't pre-load videos before you go on holidays.

Not sure but maybe it's driven by the studios? Maybe it's easier to download Netflix vids on rooted phones?

This sucks. I wonder if some enterprising developer will write a workaround for this.
