Destiny 2 PC Will Trail Consoles; Has No Dedicated Servers

A Bungie interview on PC Gamer talks about the PC edition of Destiny 2, and how the shooter sequel will be "legit on day one" of its release. That day one reference is a little painful in light of a previous post they made on the topic saying the PC edition may well have a later release date than its console counterparts. "We're not committed to a PC date yet, but at Bungie we're totally committed to making a PC build as great as we can," explains Bungie game director Luke Smith. "Our partnership with Blizzard and being on Battle.net, we want to make sure that this version of the game has the time it needs to bake in the oven so it's a delicious piece of bread when it comes out." In other PC-specific news, they note that though multiplayer will be handled through the service formerly known as Battle.net, the game will not feature dedicated server support, with Bungie's David Shaw invoking the term "typology" seemingly at random: "It is a complicated typology. We do not have dedicated servers for Destiny 2 on PC."

"dedicated server" has NEVER meant "end-user built/controlled box"

Sorry to tell you but almost all the big AAA games came with dedicated servers in the 90's, mmo's are just RPG's with the dedicated server exe's not released so they can charge subscription fee's.

So dedicated servers in the 90's MEANT USER CONTROLED SERVERS completely 100%, where do you think Rocket arena and all those quake server mods like CPMA came from?

MMO's were the original scam game. Quake and UT have dedicated servers built into the exe's, so you just host from within the program. Dedicated server meant - user hostable servers. Note that World of warcraft and ultima online have private servers, so the whole "MMO's can only be done by special computers at corporate HQ" is 100% false.

There's no reason mmo servers can't be run by players but then the mmo scam money wouldn't come their way. MMO's could be 100% released as totally one purchase software like any other regular game in the 90's. It's mass tech illiteracy and human irrationality that keeps the mmo model afloat.

It's strange to think that ActiBlizz freely give away money to steam with the yearly CoD releases on PC when they now have a perfectly good store/launcher of their own. I think that's it's probably due to nobody playing CoD on PC anymore, and it would just be a blight on battle.net's launcher.

I suspect that's it exactly. The marketshare for CoD on PC is fairly insignificant compared to console.

When I was in college we had an executive from EA give a seminar. This was way back when they just stopped publishing their sports titles on PC (waaaaaaaaaaaay back). Someone asked him why and he said that their sports games on PC weren't even breaking even. All of the money they took in was from consoles.

I remember reading an article a few years back, the game was Black Ops 3 and they only looked at physical sales, but the PC marketshare was 1% of the total sales. Granted steam wasn't included, but neither were the Xbox and PS online stores either.

EDIT: Here it is. http://www.ubergizmo.com/2015/11/91-percent-sales-black-ops-3-console/

Errr, where are you seeing that Blizzard is putting their name on this? It's going to use Blizzard's launcher, because why wouldn't Activision just use their own store rather than give Steam/Origin etc 30%. But that's going to be as far as it'll go. This is not going to be "Blizzard's Destiny 2."

Anyways, Destiny 2 could be good fun on PC, but this no dedicated servers thing is something I'll have to wait and see on.

And for the love of everything good in the gaming world, "dedicated server" has NEVER meant "end-user built/controlled box" It's a technical term that's just as descriptive as it needs to be. Dedicated servers mean a server that isn't one of the players ie. P2P. I don't know how they could do Destiny 2's MMO'y features without a dedicated server in some capacity. ESPECIALLY for the 6v6 PvP modes. That shit on p2p is just utterly shameful if true. Although it is Activision, they pulled that shit with so man CoD games I lost track. So there's precedent.

Wasn't the only port of a Bungie game Halo, and that was done by another company was it not?

I think the only game Bungie ported themselves was Oni and the PC port was actually considered the best version if I am not mistaken even though the game itself was simply "okay" at best. Halo was done by Gearbox and Halo 2/Wars by Microsoft.

I mean, if someone really wants to find something to complain about in regards to Bungie's quality on PC I guess you could reach back to Myth 2 with the legendary uninstall bug but that's about it...

Definitely no (single player) demo and/or no free (multiplayer) trial = no buy

You must not buy many games. Both these are becoming a rarity. Especially single player demos.

It depends on the game and storefront. As the other dude whom I referred to indirectly pointed out, most storefronts except Blizztard's fucking Shittynet, of course, have a refund policy so you can effectively demo the game (the Prey guys from Arkane even outright suggested using Steam refunds for a 2 hour demo).

Origin has some super-generous demos and trials of many of their games and a super-generous refund policy (demos/trials being a rarity is a myth of elitist Steam clowns who only use Steam exclusively but as I said even there you can get a 2 hour demo via the refund "workaround").

Only greedy fucking Blizztard doesn't have any of that, of course. That is why a free demo or trial is absolutely mandatory for this casual shit game.
Well, either that, or maybe they could catch up with the year of the lord 2017 and update their Shittynet client to include basic customer features like refunds. Just an idea.

Speaking of that, Prey is a good game. My Bioshock nostalgia feelers were strong that Sunday morning and I went and paid the full price for it (something I try to avoid). And I'm glad I did, been enjoying the hell out of it.

On one hand, the two Halo games we got were...not suited for PC to begin with, and Halo 2 required an OS no one wanted.

On the other hand, Blizzard is putting their name on this, and that's no small consideration. They'd rather kill a game weeks before launch than put out something short of stellar.

So I'm willing to bet that's why they're claiming it'll be good to go from day 1....Blizzard is probably demanding it. I wouldn't be surprised if the multiplayer is PC only, because while the co-op wouldn't matter, the versus mode would be packed with console players claiming pc users are cheating.

Overwatch has dedicated servers

Does it? I see an announcement from 2015 that it will, but then endless complaints in 2016 and 2017 that it does not.

Yep it does. Blue even posted a news story about Blizzard warning players not to create servers for the sole purpose of using them to level up. People were setting up games where you just login, join a match, and go do something else. When the match timer ends you get XP for doing NOTHING.

I'll judge ye once it is out on the PC. I'm sure I'll then wait at best for a sale. It isn't like we are sitting here jonesing for a game these days, so no big.

"Dedicated servers" does not mean what it once did. Now it means company run servers. Or more specifically NOT P2P.
