The Surge Released

Steam News announces the release of The Surge, a Windows action/RPG for Windows featuring mechanized combat with high-tech exoskeletons. The game's launch trailer that came out last week offers a look at gameplay, and Steam offers this description:

A catastrophic event has knocked you out during the first day on the job… you wake up equipped with a heavy-grade exoskeleton, in a destroyed section of the complex. Robots gone haywire, insane augmented co-workers and rogue AI - everything wants you dead.

Defy deadly enemies and huge bosses in tight, visceral melee combat. Target and slice specific limbs off your foes, with a next-gen loot system where you loot what you dismember. Equip, upgrade and craft new weapons and armors sliced from enemies, and make yourself stronger through a fresh take on leveling-up.

No ranged weapons for players, only melee weapons with varying reach. Enemies hase some limited range weapons but nothing a quick dash forward and a strike can't fix

I have to say in genral some of the mobs in this game are actually a bit harder than most souls mobs, altho that might be due to the still slightly too long attack animations which cannot be cancelled out of and need to be commited to once initiated.

Armors actually do make quite a difference, and differentiate by speed (lower stamina consumption, therefore more endu to dodge around) vs. heavier armor and some (surely not all) decent set bonuses.

What is this? The year of the ARPG? Seems every other game is one.

You do realized there are tons of games being released these days and pretty much everything is covered and then some. EA - Every game an EA? Survival? Is every game a Survival? MOBA? Is every game a Moba? It goes on and on, there are no shortages, but developers develop.

I'm 13h in, and still loving it...

As a massive Souls fan (have all + BB), I think it's great another company is making these kinds of games... And I agree with some of Quinn's points, in that, LOTF is a better 'experience' than souls games, in that, it feels like you're playing part in a story... Though LOTF has nothing on Souls replayability... I played through on all three 'classes', using weapons appropriate to that starting design, and it's varied quite a bit, but all three were fun ; )

The Surge continues that... There are 5 types of weapons, and variations within each type, but the advancement system doesn't lock you in, like it does with Souls games (minus those with respec systems). The various types of armor seem to make even less difference, but I guess that's pretty true in this entire genre...

In short, it's a great experience so far... The story is interesting enough, the graphics are great (for this genre), the advancement is good (The implant system is a nice way to add to it, and the trade-off vs energy usage is good), the fighting feels good (and gory, if you like that shit; loved Shadow of Mordor kills myself).

@Darks

IF there are ranged weapons, they're pretty rare.
Looks like it's an almost 100% melee-based game.

So I've been playing the Surge for another 7h since last night (11 total) and i still stand by my first impression: It's good.

It certainly is no Dark Souls but that's not neccessarily a bad thing in this case, and I am a huge Souls fan, probably around 2k hours on Demons Souls to Dark Souls 3, including Bloodborne.

It is slightly friendlier to the player, having an option to pause combat and with the proficiencies that will keep levelling up, no matter if you die or not.

But to answer your question, there are a lot of things I don't like about LOTF not limited only to:
Slow reacting character, animations too long, exaggerated heaviness, mushy camera controls, weird animations in cutscenes, just to name a few that spring to mind right away.

And yesterday I installed it again (with 65min played previously) and tried to keep an open mind, not even expecting a game of the quality of the Souls series and just seeing is as a 3rd person action rpg.

Still couldn't do it. ANd my biggest problem about games like this is that with a handful of tweaks it could have been good (cutscenes and voice acting excluded ofc.), and it makes me quite sad thinking of the time, money, creativity and passion people invested in a game of this size.

This is all a very personal opinon ofc and as mentioned based on only about an hour of playtime, wjhich for core mechanics is enough tho.

Is the game all Melee? or are there ranged type weapons? Not really into stickily melee type games.

In my opinion LOTF and Souls cannot really be fairly compared but anyway: The Surge is a lot closer to Souls than it is to LOTF, 2 ideas that they successfully brought over from LOTF is the risk/reward gamble with the higher scrap multiplier the more scrap you already carry around and the fact that it can be paused anytime.

This game, like Lords of the Fallen, probably wipes the floor with Dark Souls. Fanbois will neber acknowledge this and probably be the source of some irrationally bad reviews, like with Lords of the Fallen.

What do you like about LotF over Dark Souls? I've never played it but really like all the Dark Souls games.

I find it hard to put into words beside the obvious: LotF's interface isn't consolitis infested hell.
LotF playing character feels like he's more with his feet solid on the ground, whereas in DS I feel like you're gliding more. Compare Arkham Asylum with ESO (3rd person) and you may get the idea.
Also, LotF is hard but not unforgiving. You observe a boss and maybe die a few times but once you get it and pay attention, the boss is downed within mere minutes. In DS you're doing nothing else but dodge all the fucking time for basically 30 minutes and attack that one second the boss lends you that break. Then your partner comes in and asks if you want a cup of tea and you can start all the fuck over again. DS bosses to me are like fighting a boss in WoW by yourself while it's in a dungeon designed for 5: it's boring rinse/repeat for ages but drop your routine once and you're dead.
Last but not least, LotF looks thrice as good and is more cinematic in its storytelling.

I could never get into these "Dark Souls" gameplay type games. I realize its attractive for a lot of people, but they are just not for me.

Out of curiosity: what was it with LotF?
Probably it's because devs misspelled "never"...
