Out of the Blue

There are electricians here in the BlueTower working on a couple of the light fixtures, part of our spiffing up the place for sale. This provided an impromptu test of my setup when they tripped the circuit breaker. The UPS kicked in as intended, and I was pleased to see it estimated I could keep working for about 45 minutes that way, which is about 40 minutes more than I recall the readout saying the last time I tripped this, which was before I replaced its battery.

Links: Thanks Ant and Acleacius.
Play: Monkey Go Happy Planet Escape.
Story: ‘You are paddleboarding next to approximately 15 great white sharks,’ chopper tells Calif. beachgoers.
Science: Boy Genius Boyan Slat’s Giant Ocean Cleanup Machine Is Real. Thanks Digg.

Sciency stuff about the American kilogram.

"ShamWow guy in jail". - I thought this was a story about the guy on TV being arrested and jailed for something, not a parody. Way to mislead.

About plastic in the ocean in general

And all done by other scientists/team/orgs...

Then again - I don't eat fish. Never did. Don't like it. No, I'm not kidding. Laugh2
And while we're on the subject, Sullied seasoning: Sea salts come with a dash of microplastics

Vice News on HBO ran a piece on the ocean cleanup endeavour about a month ago, and it's getting recognition in quite a few other areas as well since then i've noticed.

The episode of Vice provided these links for people interested in it:

Yes, tinkering with nature always has its dangers. I am hoping for programmable nanites doing this job in the future - at least they would not harm anything else but microplastic.

The funny thing for me about Trump raising the possibility of there being a tape of his conversation with Comey is this --

When I first learned about the dinner and the different versions of what was supposedly said by both parties... the first thing I thought was, "too bad Comey isn't a paranoid nut too, he might have recorded the conversation and we'd have proof (possibly not legally collected) of Comey's version."

Then Trump came out this his follow-up statement. Freaking hilarious to me.

Blue, doesn't one of your relatives work for the NIST?

edit: or maybe some bn forum member mentioned a relative of theirs was, anyway it's all relative.

It's my uncle, who works directly on that measurements and standards stuff, specifically finding a more precise way to define a kilogram. He probably works with the guy in that video.

He's a pretty accomplished physicist.

There is actually a bacterium that can digest microplastics. Maybe this could help in the future.

That ocean clean up machine is something that I can't believe isn't getting more publicity and funding.

I'm hoping it works, it might be the biggest environmental cleanup impact in my lifetime if it does.

United Parcel Service - even helping with blackouts now!
Blue, if you two are investing so much time and money, you might want to stay at the Blue Tower in the end because it has been turned into a Trump Tow... Nah, forget what I wrote.
