Hearthstone Celebrates 70 Million Players

Play Hearthstone? Then Blizzard would like to personally thank you and the 69,999,999 other players who have tried their card-based strategy game. They are handing out some free card packs to celebrate the occasion:
It’s a good thing that there’s always room for one more, because the tavern has now welcomed over 70 Million players! On top of that, with Journey to Un'Goro, Hearthstone had more players playing together on the same day—around the whole world—than at any point in its history!

The Next Round’s on US!
We’re humbled and grateful that so many players have chosen to join us for some Hearthstone fun. As our way of saying thanks, starting today through the end of May, everyone who logs in will receive three free Journey to Un’Goro card packs. Yup! Everyone! Even new players! Just log in to claim your bonus packs!

I loved the idea of Hearthstone and still think it can be a supremely fun game ... but someone said "it's about chasing the meta" and that is so true.

The minute they started releasing big card-packs/expansions in fairly rapid succession, I stopped playing and following the game. It quickly became a "get the latest cards" and "find the most OP deck and copy it". We're now, what, 4 or 5 expansions in? There are so many cards out there, their attempt to "exclude" certain packs and make Standard vs. Wild games isn't helping. For me.

TL;DR -- too difficult for new players to get into with the massive pile of cards/expansions, too difficult for old-timers to get *back* into for the same reason.

I had quite a lot of fun with HS on launch. After the third or so expansion it got a serious case of "Blizzardittis" and it turned from a game of skill, into a game of chasing the meta. I quit, and haven't looked back.

Yeah it was fun at first, but once I hit the pay wall the frustration set in. My F2P deck just couldn't compete with the premades.

I hate this bullshit puff PR. Our game is in huge decline so we are going to celebrate it with a fake announcement, everyone join us!

I'm not dogging anyone who enjoys HS, but it's not for me. I found myself having more fun with the board. When that happened I was like, "Okay, I'm done."

Forced me to play 3 games against AI before I could do anything, just a heads up if anyone expects not to play... Haha. Got a legendary card in a pack though.

Haha, I don't really enjoy HS but I'll log in just for those free cards... maybe someday when they actually add replayable PVE.

Got back into HOTS though. So much free stuff. Probably gonna put money into it, which will make it the second F2P I've ever put money into.

Registered and Active are two entirely different things. At its peak, WOW had close to 13 million active players. Now it's diminished to the point where they no longer report numbers. Hearthstone is the same way. How many are active, and of that amount, how many buy things? That's the real barometer for success. I suspect the real number is MUCH less than this fluffy PR piece makes it out to be. Also, it sounds like Blizzard is trying to get people addicted by giving them their "first hit" for free. Has Activision-Blizzard's marketing gone too far?

Haven't played Hearthstone in years but have been playing Faeria recently. Very tactical and a nice community as well. Watch Totalbiscuits wtf video that's what got me interested and tons more a few months ago. They are releasing a new co-op addon in the next month or so which will be adding 30 new cards so now is a good time to get into it.

If you do try it, add me (in game name is jadei) as a recruiter and we both get loot boxes.
