X-Wing XWVM Mod Video

This video shows off gameplay from XWVM, an upcoming mod for LucasArts' original Star Wars X-Wing game, which it will support whether downloaded from Steam, GOG.com, or played off the original floppies (thanks JDreyer). The clip shows off the various modern visual improvements they are adding, though there are apologies for the out-of-sync sound, which was due to video editing problems. Here's a list of elements they show off:

  • New explosions.
  • New HDR lighting.
  • New planets and sun.
  • Mission selection screen.
  • Complete Y-Wing historical mission set.
  • AI improvements.
  • Mission 5 playthrough.

Still very much behind the Freespace 2 source code project mods, but if what they say about being only 1% done, its showing promise.

Xwing was ok but tie fighter had a better storyline. Xwing alliance has HD packs and is totally playable today. It also has multiplayer that still works and lets you and your mates coordinate epic battles.
Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

This is just a game engine replacement. You need to own the original. They are doing other cool stuff like redoing the dynamic MIDI soundtrack.

A game engine replacement for just the in flight stuff? I get that it is a mod, but I want to know if I load up the game the menu is still there and when I press Fly after a mission briefing that it looks like that.
Yeah not sure. But this team has been pretty good communicating, so I'm sure we'll find out soon.

Those are very precise and bomb proof.
I just wish they'd have the twist option so that you don't have to buy a set of pedals.
I ended up with the Saitek X55 when I was playing a lot of Elite
I know Saitek is not the same quality as CH but it served me well so far.

I heartily recommend the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. I had wanted a nice HOTAS setup for my adventures in Elite:Dangerous and other flight/space sims and was looking at both the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X and the Thrustmaster T.16000 FCS HOTAS (who thinks of these names?!). But, in the end, I figured spending around $40, given how much time I actually spend using it, was enough and thus, the Logi Extreme 3D Pro it was! Can't say I'm disappointed at all, it does exactly what I need it to and it's got that really nifty 'twist' so I don't have to worry about the whole rudder pedal thing. (I 'could' use my Logi G25 pedals if need be, though). I tried playing with just a PS3 Dualshock controller and a Logi Rumblepad2 but it's just not enough. I feel too...detached, when playing with a gamepad. With a stick, you feel like you're in more control. Eventually I plan to pick up a proper HOTAS setup, stick and throttle separate. Until then, though, what I have does fine. Would love to get into some old X-Wing/Tie Fighter action with it!

I own both the Thrustmaster T.16000M and Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, and either would be sufficient for this game. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

The T.16000M has hall-effect sensors so it is more accurate (I believe the 16000 comes from the 16000x16000 measurement grid that the sensors can sample from), but has some of the worst buttons on any flight stick I have ever used, especially on the base, and the throttle is worse than the logitech one as well, IMO. This one has more buttons than the 3D Pro, sporting 12 on the base compared to the 6 on the 3D Pro's base, but the 3D Pro has more buttons at the top of the stick and a thumb button on the side of the handle that is useful. The T.16000M is also ambidextrous, with removable parts of the handle to facilitate both lefties and righties.

The Extreme 3D Pro is less accurate and will probably break sooner than the Thrustmaster in some way or another, but has much higher quality buttons and feels a ton more comfortable to use. There are also more buttons on the stick itself, including a handy thumb button, but it has half as many buttons on the base as the Thrustmaster. The 3D Pro is not ambidextrous and is made for right-handed folks only. For an old game like xwing, accuracy doesn't matter nearly as much, so this would probably be the better pick for this game, of the two.

Very nice, too bad the cutscenes couldn't be upscaled as well. They really motivated you to play so you could see the next one and on and on.

No, really, this is impressive. I will definitely go back to X-Wing with this mod. Great work, guys! And now... TIE Fighter, please, after you have finished this mod. PLEASE!
It makes sense that they would start with X-Wing. But it was also the weakest game of the series in every way (especially the difficulty curve). So I agree, nail X-Wing and then bring on the Tie Fighter.

It looks sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet as hell. I'm just worried that since it's a small team / work as they have time, it'll be absolute yonks before it's ever out... But eh, it's also been 20+ years since I last played Xwing, so I can wait a bit.

Anybody recommend a good joystick for these games?

I played the original with a CH Flightstick. You need a precise stick, and all of the extra buttons help manage the various fighter systems.

I have read up a bit on this and there's no ETA yet. It's just a few guys doing this in there spare time. Probably as the feel they're getting close to the end they'll announce.

That being said they've made great strides in four months.

Wow, that looks really good.

Is this the same mod that was on Blues a few months ago, where they had accidentally made the TIE AI too good, and they were dodging every laser blast? If so, that's just going to make me rage quit.

Doesn't seem so from the video, but I swear that was this mod. I guess they fixed that supernatural AI aspect.
Same one. They have said they're going to scale that back and that there will be a range of AI levels.
