Abandon Ship Trailer

A new trailer from Abandon Ship shows off gameplay from this upcoming naval combat game set during the age of sail. The clip includes narration, but they also provide a primer on what we're seeing here:

In the video we get a glimpse of the depth of the systems that players will be encountering in combat:

  • Positioning the class-based crew to gain optimal performance. For example when the Gunner manís weapons they reload faster.
  • Ships are broken into Sections. The performance of that section is affected by its health status. Savvy players will target specific sections to fit in with their battle plans.
  • Distance between ships determines:
    • Visibility (which can be improved with upgrades)
    • Weapon range
    • What actions can be performed (like boarding or ramming)
  • Fires spreading across the ship, with crew desperately trying to extinguish them before they rage out of control.
  • Hull Cracks that flood the ship. If you take on too much water, youíll sink. You can lower the water level by manning the pumps.
  • Crew getting knocked overboard and diverting someone to man the winch and attempt a rescue.
  • Lightning, Rain, Tidal Waves and Fog modifiers that force players to adapt their battle tactics.
  • A vast array of weapons, each with a meaningful difference that plugs into your preferred strategy.
  • How upgrades can complement your chosen strategy. Harpoons and Hull Spikes might suit a player that likes to fight at close range.
  • Environmental modifiers like Icebergs in special Arctic maps, plus upgrades that mitigate this (in this example the Icebreaker, which deflects Icebergs without taking damage).

Players will have to consider all these factors as they make constant decisions on a moment-to-moment basis to ensure they emerge from battle victorious.

Was hoping this was a sinking ship survival game kind of like The Poseidon Adventure. That would fascinating.

You're a space game fan. You've played FTL, right?

I am, and I have. It's in my Steam library, but I'm not a fan. Too much micro-managing. I was thinking more rogue-like with isometric Diablo 3-styled graphics. Several things would be random each time:

> Size of ship; length and floors
> When ship hits object
> Type and size of object
> How long until boat fully sinks
> How long until floor is completely submerged
> Number of items to survive (e.g. rope, water, food, matches, hydrant, ax, compass, map, etc.)
> How many NPCs, and how many want to survive (similar to The Poseidon Adventure where some of the crew and guests were adamant about staying put, and others were willing to go.)
> How many NPCs are cowards and how many are brave? (push comes to shove who will fight or flee)
> Which skills an NPC who flees with you has
> Challenge Modes:
- Easy: Only you = Win;
- Medium: You and one guest = Win;
- Hard: You and all guests = Win;
- Heroic: Not you and X number of guests = Win; (You choose the difficulty to sacrifice yourself for. You can see how many NPCs your actions saved.)

I think that would be fun and thrilling. Especially when you see the water enter a floor, the reaction will be frantic. "Oh crap! I have X amount of time get stuff from this floor and move up before it's under water!" I never liked the Titanic movie, but I loved the sinking part. The entire last hour or so was incredibly thrilling.

William Shakespeare's "Star Wars" Act I, Scene 1: Aboard the rebel ship. / Enter C-3PO and R2-D2. / C-3PO: "Now is the summer of our happiness / Made winter by this sudden, fierce attack!" / R2-D2 ó Beep beep, Beep, beep, meep, squeak, beep, whee!

The only thing that flat-earthers have to fear is sphere itself.

Still looking really good, although I know that water direction vs ship heading is going to piss nautical people off.

Also it seems like ramming should be with the bow, not the side of the ship!

FTL on the high seas. This has potential. I'm not sold on the mechanics yet (seems more arcadey than simulationist), but if it's fun, I'll play it...
