Out of the Blue

We're celebrating here in the BlueTower, as today is our wedding anniversary. That's actually poetic license, as MrsBlue is coming home from Pennsylvania later today, but we do have a dinner reservation tonight. It is quite a schlep home for her, though, so we're leaving open the option of switching our night out to the weekend if it suits us. Something about the occasion struck me just this week. We originally planned on getting married on the 20th, which was somewhat random, but we had to push it back a week due to a conflict with another wedding. Had our plan stayed unchanged, we would have gotten married on 4/20 before scooting off to Europe for a honeymoon that included time in Amsterdam. This was 21 years ago, so 4/20 wasn't even a thing back then, but I'm not sure anyone would have believed us that this was coincidence at this point. Probably doesn't help that our officiants were Cheech and Chong?

Documentaries not actually fake. Some fake studio sounds, and typical editing are the culprits.

From the article: "Under the airline’s new customer-first policy, travelers who voluntarily give up their seats will be eligible to receive up to $10,000 in travel certificates. " I'd like to hear the specifics on that, because my guess would be it will never happen. If they were smart, they'd just authorize the employees handling this to offer increasing amounts up to the $10,000 limit. I've been on flights where they were offering incentives to give up a seat. And I'm reasonably certain if they started offering $1,000 in travel certificates for giving up a seat, and upped the amount $500 every 30 seconds or so.. they would not reach $10,000 before someone volunteered...

This was 21 years ago, so 4/20 wasn't even a thing back then,

the term certainly was.. but usually applied to time on the clock rather than a day, or just as a code for smoking... first heard about it back as freshman in college, circa 1994.. and this was in the south

IIRC, its been a term used out west since the 70s-80s

Throw on the smoking jacket and cravat and aftershave. Chill up the champers. Put on some Tom Jones and greet her with flowers. That's the way the World's Most Interesting Man would do it.

While I can’t disagree that credit cards can be scams, I feel like that piece was excusing people for lacking self-control. I’ve always felt there was a pretty simple concept behind keeping debt free with a credit card; if you can’t afford to buy something why would you decide to buy it anyways and then pay more for it later? You can’t afford it, how is paying more for it a reasonable solution? I understand shit happens sometimes, expenses due to accidents, medical, etc., but I feel so many people take a, ‘fuckit I want it now and will deal with the finances later’ approach. Sorry, don’t have much pity for people who get hit with the credit card ‘scam’ that way; particularly if they refuse to acknowledge it was their behaviors that caused the problem in the first place.

I meant I don't recall the date 4/20 being considered to be relevant to 420 back then, either publicly, or in an underground way. I just may not be traveling in the right wrong circles. But I know for sure that I had never heard of the date being a stoner thing when we were considering a wedding date, or that aspect of it would have been discussed. We actually did have a concern that it was Hitler's birthday, so we were trying to be conscious of things like that.

anything that read "420" was considered related if you already knew what 420 meant

no it wasnt a national holiday like it is now, but people were definitely celebrating april 20 back then as well in numerous ways, as well as calling it out when seeing the time on the clock, a room in a motel, a number on a list, etc. etc. etc. you get the idea

but yeh the people i knew were certainly celebrating it back then, and honestly it wasnt that "privately"

did you ever deal drugs?? did you ever do actual crimes with actual criminals? the point is, yeh the social circle is the defining factor and i seriously doubt you knew "everyone", because nobody does

but the people i knew that smoked weed also did lots of other drugs as well, and they definitely knew about it and they definitely did crazy and often stupid shit on april 20

No, Blue is correct. As someone who used to be a 'head' back in the day there was no association with '420' back then. At least on the east coast. Fact is hash used to be really easy to get here and it was weed that was hard to come by for the longest time. I miss some good black Afghani heesh.

Happy Anniversary!

Also, 4/20 was *definitely* a thing 21 years ago, and I can attest to this first-hand growing up on the east coast, we 'celebrated' both the am/pm and the calendar day. I remember my first time seeing a Thai stick was on a 4/20 in the early nineties, and being blown away that it was literally the size of an adult arm. It really depends on the group you got down with, but many of us 'celebrated' it back then.

You're right, it wasn't a thing back then and circles were smaller. Didn't know it was hitlers b-day until I read the article, good call all around. Enjoy your anniversary.
