Starfighter Origins Tomorrow

Mad About Games Studios announces Starfighter Origins will launch tomorrow, offering a space combat game with a throwback 90s style. There are details on the game on the Starfighter Origins website, and you can get a look at gameplay in the release trailer. Here's more on the game:

Starfighter Origins is a 90's styled space combat simulator which has been inspired by games such as wing commander, freespace, star wars and many more. The game focuses on single player and boasts 4 single player game modes which include Campaign, Simulator, Challenge and Instant Action. There are over 40 missions which range from dogfighting to large space battles. The player will face a variety of different enemies such as fighters, gunships, bombers, mines, frigates, cruiser, bases and more. More info is available on the official website: http://www.StarfighterOrigins.com

“We have gone back to the roots of space combat, spending many years working in the freespace engine on mods such as The Babylon project has been a huge plus," said Lead Designer Shaun Williams. "There are many space games coming onto the market but not many single player and story driven scripted games. A lot of games are multiplayer, dynamically generated or does not focus entirely on space combat simulation." "With the incredible experience and talent of our small indie team, we are thrilled to offer what we believe is the most exciting single player space combat game to hit the market for a long time.”

All focus on Starfighter origins is single player and is designed around a unique pick up and play control system. The controls are easy to pick up and take time to master. The game is best played with a gamepad but also supports HOTAS and keyboard and mouse as well as full native support for Track IR.

Newtonian or non-newtonian? Everyone seems to gravitate towards the former, but I find it not to as much fun since it puts such a heavy emphasis on planning every maneuver ahead of time.

If you eat enough greasy chili, sure.

It looks pretty good. Dated graphically, but the gameplay is where it needs to be at. Dogfights looked a little slow/simple, but hard to tell from a video.

Someone buy this and do a review.

-"No, OUR slaughter!"
Dunning Kruger effect in full blossom. Such a fun movie.

It's UE4; you can tell by its trademark shimmering and refraction and by how its says UE4 at the end =p

Hmm, I wonder that engine that is. Sure reminds of Freepsace - the leader designer did mention having experience with freespace modding.

It's hard to not read this as, "It would make me happy if the company lost a bunch of money."

Like, CJ said being optimized for gamepad makes it a no-go, even though it supports HOTAS and TrackIR. But how many copies do you think they can sell if they limit it to PC gamers who have a joystick? Battlefront has a ton of money to spend on visuals because it's aimed at the broad, casual crowd. Generally you trade away whiz-bang graphics when you cater to niches. It's doubtful any more companies can go the crowdfunding route and get tens of thousands of dollars from individual donors.

It's cool and all that they're making it, but, I honestly would rather have a circa 2017 story-driven, military campaign space combat simulator, not one from the 90s. I want an X-Wing/Freespace series soft reboot with the visuals of Battlefront 2. And not aimed at consoles.

IMO they capture the look, visually, of Rogue One with the Battlefront footage. I desperately want that with a modern proper simulator and not some weak on-rails shooter.

Looks like plenty of fun. Of course wait for reviews, but it's something to keep an eye out for.

These guys probably made this whole game on the budget of what SC development costs for a day.

But... but... but... it's never been done befoaaaaarrrr and it's revolutionary and... and... immershun and fideliteh!!!11

As for this announcement they had me all the way up to...

The game is best played with a gamepad...

Noooooooooooo.

Definitely need to see 'overwhelmingly positive' on this after six months and a few hundred reviews or /pass cuz I'm not a console peasant. Never have been, never will be. Gamepad is a round 1 instant knock-out.

Oooh P.S.: Meanwhile at CIG, you can now earn STAR KITTEN (no fucking joke either) themed gear when referring the game to other people. L to the O to the L.

I dunno... Looking through the shininess of the trailer, this seems shallow, bland and unpolished/amateurish to me. I have no idea though, it's just how it looks to me.

Yeah, no reviews as of yet (on STEAM anyways). Be interesting to see the feedback over a few weeks.

Looks like the game will be about $18-20 once released.

Hold on everybody. There's something very wrong here that should give you pause:

THERE'S NO EARLY ACCESS.

How are we supposed to enjoy pining away for missing features? How are we supposed to bond over complaining about the game never finishing and the devs just taking the money and moving on? They're robbing us of these opportunities!

So you've been warned: stay away from this one.

From STEAM page:

New Update Online
Hi Pilots, A new update is now online for our testers and those who have early access. (220mb)

So there was an Early Access.... game on

Play a game like Dead By Daylight and you will learn that not being EA, doesnt mean the game is finished or polished in any way.

Wow, where did this come from? Need to check this out!

Exactly what I was thinking...

Will wait to see reviews but all I wanted out of star citizen was another Freespace 2 type game. This might scratch that itch and actually get released.

The graphics are pretty low quality, then again it is a "90's styled" space combat simulator by a small indie team. I will keep an eye on this. If the reviews are okay, I will bite!

Cue all Star Citizens saying "B... b... but... IMMERSION! SHINY GRAPHICS! LANDING ON PLANETS! EGO SHOOTER! MMO! PERSISTENT UNIVERSE! SCOPE OF PROJECT!" Star Citizen should have been either a Wing Commander or Privateer game updated with modern graphics. It would have been released by now and the studio could work on adding elements or building a MMO Privateer. This small indie group understood this and pulled it off! Is it a good game? We will see. But at least a finished game got released.

They're waiting for you, Gabe, in the test chamber!
