Out of the Blue

A game anniversary passed a few weeks ago I should have mentioned at the time. Happy 20th anniversary to Outlaws, the western-themed shooter released on March 31, 1997. This was a 2D game in a 3D world, but its hand-drawn art style was part of its appeal. The game also had an Ennio Morricone-inspired soundtrack that has some of the greatest game music of all time. It's been a few years since my last playthrough of this classic, so I feel it's about time to revisit it again.

Memento, Fight Club and The Prestige are all excellent films. Interestingly, they are all films best seen when you know nothing about them. I'd probably rate Memento a hair below The Prestige and Fight Club. Can't imagine watching any of them on regular cable or network television. They way they cut films up it they would surely ruin something...

We all have our wall of shame: those great movies that we haven't gotten around to seeing yet. Top 2 on mine are Fight Club, and The Prestige. Well, only Fight Club remains because I watched The Prestige this weekend. Amazing story, amazing cast, great world building, just such a fantastic film. Easily Nolan's best film, and I say that as a huge fan of all his other work (excepting perhaps DKR)

Holy Jeebus you picked Prestige over Fight Club...well, you saved the best for last, I suppose. Not that The Prestige isn't great; it's fantastic. Fight Club is just significantly better. Hopefully you've gotten this far without someone ruining it for you.

Edit: I just realized I re-bought Fight Club on blu-ray and haven't watched it. Well, shit, I know what I'm doing tonight.

Funny thing. I bought Fight Club on BRD last year. It's still sitting in it's shrink wrap. I plan to watch it with my wife, but it's been hard to get our schedules to match up, and when they do, we typically go out instead of stay home.

I may just have to watch it by myself.

And yeah, Memento is freakin' awesome. If you've never seen it, don't read anything about it, just rent or borrow it. You won't regret it. Chris Nolan's first big movie.

Yes.

So you don't think a giant extinction level asteroid will hit us first?

Let's just say that given the way things have gone the last few years and how 'dark' the world seems right now, our luck would see the asteroid hitting us two years after the nuclear apocalypse. Just when we start to get our 'Fallout' on, BOOM!

If I could live on Mars, I'd be there by now.

I loved the game Outlaws back then, probably finished it three times over the years. I liked how you didn't just blast everything with a million bullets; you aimed and made it count. Not sure how it would play today, you'd probably be better off with Call of Juarez on modern machines if you wanted something similar.

For the wall of fame i choose Memento, if it's on your wall of shame you gotta watch it.

I don't know if Blue posted it last week, but I just discovered that J. Geils passed away April 11. He was one of my favorites as a kid growing up in the 80s.

Yeah, still one of the best games ever, and absolutely the best soundtrack ever. I still listen to it now and then.

Outlaws Soundtrack Playlist

Sanctuary and Two Feathers being my favorites. It's also one of John Romero's fave games too.
