Gone Gold - The Surge

Focus Home Interactive announce completion of development on The Surge, saying Deck13's hardcore action/RPG will come to Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 16th. They also talk about a day one patch for the PS4 Pro to support dynamic 4K at 30fps or in 1080p at 60fps, and another patch will follow with HDR support, but they don't clarify what this means for PC gamers. Here's word on the game:
Set in a heavily dystopian future as Earth nears the end of its life, those who remain in the overpopulated cities must work to survive as social programs become saturated by an ageing population and increasing environmental diseases. As the intelligence of technology incrementally increased over the years, many jobs for the human race had been made redundant, forcing Earth's citizens to head out into the suburbs seeking labor, aided by exoskeletons to improve their efficiency. The world of The Surge offers a very grim vision of the future, where the evolution of our technology, our society and our relation with the environment led to a decadent state of the Human civilization. The Surge features innovative combat mechanics and an original character progression system based on modular upgrades gained through tight, visceral combat.

Key Features

  • Tight, visceral hardcore action RPG combat
  • Unique targeting, dismemberment and level up systems
  • Explore a dystopian world full of mystery
  • Battle an array of huge, fearsome bosses
  • Loot, craft, and upgrade new weapons and armors

its understandable to think it is only this way if you are still young and/or relatively new to gaming, or someone who just lacks knowledge in general.. which is also quite common

Or if one has a broader perspective of gaming than someone who uses the term to mean "computer gaming." Or if one is not especially literally-minded, and more comfortable with abstract language.

As for its recent vintage, lots of language works that way. E.g., "his or her" or "their" in lieu of "his."

"on rails" was never applied to any other type of game before the term was used in computer gaming... details like this are usually unknown and specifically not a concern for people who would just rather tow the line, fit the trends, be a good little follower, and basically hold the standard of peer pressure as the highest authority

but thats just bullshit.. its the reason why the word "literally" now means its exact opposite, and frankly i dont give a shit if you want to redefine every word in the language to suit your own level of ignorance... but the simple fact remains, thats what it is

I think the term might have been used in arcade games first, for light gun games -- "rail shooters." But yeah, it means exactly that.

Calling something that is red red instead of green, doesn't make anyone a nerd. Specifics matter and "on rails" is something quite different to "linear" when it comes to games.

Not defending the game, but this whole discussion is silly.

oh good lord. fuggin nerd alert.

Call it what you want. From the videos and gameplay out there, it is a very tight hallway game with little to no open rooms.

It is perfect for a console, I am sure the FOV is 60.

Well I will say I haven't played a COD since MW2 so maybe shit has changed horribly but they did a great job having action scenes and actual stories.

Other games with good stories on rails:
Halo, Fear, Bioshock...

Bioshock is more of an FPSRPG than an FPS. But whatever, it's still on rails.

Yeah, the straight up MW SP campaigns are fun, like playing an 80s action movie. BLOPs kind of sucked tho. Not sure why.

So anything not sandbox/openworld is on rails huh? Lmao.

Your point of view is similar to being on the front of a train, with little to no option as to where to go, much like a train, on rails.

"on rails" traditionally refers to shooters where you have no control over your own movement

somehow that has replaced the more accurate term of being "scripted"

Never mind. Covered in a later post.

"On rails" (or variants like "railroad") is a general gaming term that isn't even limited to computer games (tabletop roleplayers use it a lot), and whenever I've seen it used, it meant "linear."

its understandable to think it is only this way if you are still young and/or relatively new to gaming, or someone who just lacks knowledge in general.. which is also quite common

but its meaning as "linear" is only a fairly recent phenomena (last decade or so) in terms of gaming

originally, its was just as specific as it sounds

Calling something "on rails" used to be an insult and exaggeration. Over time, I think people who weren't used to what it actually meant thought the insult was a legitimate term for it.

It's like calling someone who thinks we should raise taxes on the rich a socialist and someone else believing that the fundamental defining principle of socialism is feeling that the rich having lower tax rates than the poor is odd.

Like most people have said, "on rails" means that you don't directly control your movement. Linear is the word you should have used. With that said, is the game linear or not? Dark Souls isn't linear.

I take back 'on rails' being a sequence where you were on a gun and couldn't move (like the Helicopter part in SIN).

Gameplay wise it looks like it's 'on rails' with not enough diversity to interest me at all.

Yeah, that's what "on rails" means. It's a step beyond "linear", which is the word most people saying "on rails" are actually looking for.

Yeah, people have utterly destroyed what "on rails" means. It's utterly worthless now, anything that is somewhat narrow is "on rails."

I've seen people call Half Life "on rails." No, but the opening was.
