Set in a heavily dystopian future as Earth nears the end of its life, those who remain in the overpopulated cities must work to survive as social programs become saturated by an ageing population and increasing environmental diseases. As the intelligence of technology incrementally increased over the years, many jobs for the human race had been made redundant, forcing Earth's citizens to head out into the suburbs seeking labor, aided by exoskeletons to improve their efficiency. The world of The Surge offers a very grim vision of the future, where the evolution of our technology, our society and our relation with the environment led to a decadent state of the Human civilization. The Surge features innovative combat mechanics and an original character progression system based on modular upgrades gained through tight, visceral combat.Key Features
- Tight, visceral hardcore action RPG combat
- Unique targeting, dismemberment and level up systems
- Explore a dystopian world full of mystery
- Battle an array of huge, fearsome bosses
- Loot, craft, and upgrade new weapons and armors

Or if one has a broader perspective of gaming than someone who uses the term to mean "computer gaming." Or if one is not especially literally-minded, and more comfortable with abstract language.
As for its recent vintage, lots of language works that way. E.g., "his or her" or "their" in lieu of "his."
"on rails" was never applied to any other type of game before the term was used in computer gaming... details like this are usually unknown and specifically not a concern for people who would just rather tow the line, fit the trends, be a good little follower, and basically hold the standard of peer pressure as the highest authority
but thats just bullshit.. its the reason why the word "literally" now means its exact opposite, and frankly i dont give a shit if you want to redefine every word in the language to suit your own level of ignorance... but the simple fact remains, thats what it is

Games that do it great on rails, Call of Duty single players. They also have some of the best FPS stories you'll ever play.

Well I will say I haven't played a COD since MW2 so maybe shit has changed horribly but they did a great job having action scenes and actual stories.
Other games with good stories on rails:
Halo, Fear, Bioshock...
Bioshock is more of an FPSRPG than an FPS. But whatever, it's still on rails.
Yeah, the straight up MW SP campaigns are fun, like playing an 80s action movie. BLOPs kind of sucked tho. Not sure why.

On rails, and I mean SERIOUSLY on rails (again from what I have seen).
Going by some posts here, everyone doesn't seem to share the same definition for an "on rails" game. Some seem to be confusing it with linear.
I've always been under the impression that on rails games means little to often no movement control, sometimes even no option as to where to look or even what direction to face.
Examples such as House Of The Dead, Virtual Cop, etc...
Your point of view is similar to being on the front of a train, with little to no option as to where to go, much like a train, on rails.
"on rails" traditionally refers to shooters where you have no control over your own movement
somehow that has replaced the more accurate term of being "scripted"

"On rails" (or variants like "railroad") is a general gaming term that isn't even limited to computer games (tabletop roleplayers use it a lot), and whenever I've seen it used, it meant "linear."

https://www.giantbomb.com/on-rails/3015-169/
but its meaning as "linear" is only a fairly recent phenomena (last decade or so) in terms of gaming
originally, its was just as specific as it sounds

I take back 'on rails' being a sequence where you were on a gun and couldn't move (like the Helicopter part in SIN).
Gameplay wise it looks like it's 'on rails' with not enough diversity to interest me at all.

Best thing about MW2 was that one mission, the one that doesn't need to be named because everyone knows the one even if they don't remember it's name.
