Out of the Blue

Congrats to UT Arlington for raging through Blizzard's Heroes of the Dorm tournament. My brain gets quickly overwhelmed by too much strategy, so Heroes of the Storm is about as much MOBA as I can handle, and I enjoy watching the matches. This is actually the third year in a row that I've watched parts of this tournament, which made me laugh at myself when I thought more about it. I've explained dozens of times that I don't watch college sports, and now I realize that for this HotS scenario I'm the exact opposite, as I get caught up in this amateur collegiate tournament every year, but I almost never watch professional games. That seems a little weird.

Some of us find most sports mind-numbingly boring. I don't get how someone can be interested in watching the same thing over and over and over again for hours on end.

It's almost like different people have different taste in things

Which is perfectly fine as long as those tastes don't involve the Bible, am I right?

I'm about to drop that permanently from rotation soon here unless things shake up quite a bit. Also made me think of how much I'm looking forward to the new season of Better Call Saul.

I have no desire to watch the series. However, I assume if the series ends without a cure a lot of people are going to be upset they wasted time watching something with no real ending.

Haha, great. The whole time I was thinking this could actually be a Disney Tron themed ride.

It must be exhausting never watching a repeat of a single tv episode or movie and always having to find something new to watch... :D

Not at all. There is way more to watch than I'll ever have time for. My Netflix queue is hundreds of items long, and I've got stuff on TiVo going back years that I haven't had time for. I also seek out material that isn't just a rehash of stuff I've seen before. I rarely rewatch anything, and if I do, it's either because I know there are things I didn't catch the first time, or because I haven't seen it in so long I don't remember what happened. If a TV show starts becoming repetitive, I drop it.

I would imagine that the reason most of us choose gaming as our preferred medium of entertainment is that we desire interactivity. To me... being told a story (TV/Movies) is the opposite of that.
I prefer to have my cake and eat it too. My favorite games are ones that are both interactive, and also tell a good story. Games like Grim Fandango or Half-life. In general, I don't like rogue-likes or RTS games for the same reason. Thankfully, there are plenty of story-driven games out there for people like me.

It must be exhausting never watching a repeat of a single tv episode or movie and always having to find something new to watch... The reason I think people watch sports is because they are literally not the same ever. If you think that the "same thing happens" every time a football or baseball game is played then you don't understand what you are watching. If you don't understand what you are watching obviously you are going to find it boring. If all you see is "this team beat that team" and don't understand all of the nuance and reason during the game that caused it then it will definitely be lost on you.

I would imagine that the reason most of us choose gaming as our preferred medium of entertainment is that we desire interactivity. To me... being told a story (TV/Movies) is the opposite of that. Sure, RPG's walk a line but if you really got into it you could probably find the plotline of any major video game originally told in a better way in a book or movie. There are only so many times I can watch rehashes of the same classic themes/tropes and very little content is breaking into new ground. How many times do we have to watch an obscure telling of some old Shakespeare plays? Watching "sports" or really just live events in general at least gives me brand new people and storylines to follow each day.

Yes, I find them about as interesting as other sports. I once made it through about 15 minutes of a Counterstrike match before getting bored watching them do the same thing over and over again. I tried watching a MOBA, but I couldn't even figure out what the hell was going on. Haven't tried watching a survival game, but I've played enough of them that I imagine it's got the excitement level of a golf game.

I, personally, find story-driven experiences much more involving. I don't criticize people that like watching sports, but generally speaking, I don't find them interesting.

Those are usually the top 3 genres on twitch, and certainly fit your description as well.

How can you not watch college football? Granted a lot of games are woefully uneven, but games between evenly matched teams are pretty freakin' amazing at times. The speed and resiliance of college football players is hella fun to watch.
