Videogame Hall of Fame Finalists

The Strong National Museum of Play announces the finalists for their Videogame Hall of Fame. This Hall is still a bit of a newb, so they have lots of worthy games to honor. Word is: "The World Video Game Hall of Fame recognizes electronic games that meet the following criteria: icon-status, the game is widely recognized and remembered; longevity, the game is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over time; geographical reach, the game meets the above criteria across international boundaries; and influence, the game has exerted significant influence on the design and development of other games, on other forms of entertainment, or on popular culture and society in general. (A game may be inducted on the basis of the last criterion without necessarily having met all of the first three.)" This press release has all the finalists, saying inductees will be announced on May 4th. Here are the dozen games in the running:

  • Donkey Kong
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Microsoft Windows Solitaire
  • Mortal Kombat
  • Myst
  • Pokémon Red and Green
  • Portal
  • Resident Evil
  • Street Fighter II
  • Tomb Raider
  • Wii Sports

There's a metric ton you can put in there. Another 10 coin-ops for sure. Something on the 2600, Commodore/Atari PC/Amiga, pretty much any game that started a genre. It looks like they want to spread it out, but the first few classes should/could be huge like 20 each.

I don't think solitaire should be on the list at all. What exactly did it inspire other then millions of lost hours of work. Only reason it's so popular is it came with all the windows operating systems, it's just a card game.

Where's Warcraft? it only launched the entire RTS genre. Simcity? there's no Sims without Simcity. Halo, Portal pffft, more worthy FPS games deserve those spots.

Wii Sports, Portal and Halo should be replaced with Wolf 3D, Doom and Quake.

The most deserving titles are IMO Windows Solitaire and Donkey Kong. All those new games can go and wait another decade or two.

Along that line some of the early work by Ozark Softscape and Dan Bunten should already be in there - M.U.L.E.

You can cast a vote in their poll and select the game you'd most like to see inducted. That's about all we get.

Realistically most of these titles should be included since they all broke ground or led the way for other titles. Why they only induct one title per year, though... maybe it makes them seem more legit.

Why is Portal in this list and not Doom? I mean Portal was a nice little puzzle game and it was followed by some other puzzle games, but Doom basically started the whole FPS genre which Halo was only a small part off...

I said the Hall is a newb, but it is not brand new. Here's word on the current roster:

Inductees to the World Video Game Hall of Fame—DOOM, Grand Theft Auto III, The Legend of Zelda, The Oregon Trail, Pac-Man, Pong, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros., Tetris, and World of Warcraft—are on permanent view in the museum’s eGameRevolution exhibit.

If I had a ballot, I'd put Donkey Kong, FF7, Solitaire and Myst in there.

Donkey Kong was probably one of the most iconic arcade cabinets of all time.

FF7 was groundbreaking at the time it came out, with the way it used polygons and 3d scenery, and it ushered in a new age of games.

Solitaire has been played by roughly 7 billion people.

And Myst, for whatever reason, was an iconic game that shifted umpteen million PCs.

The rest were good games (in many cases better than the four previously listed), but really didn't have that much of an influence or were just iterations on stuff that came before.

I could be persuaded for a case for Wii sports.
