Out of the Blue

This "flat Earth" craze came up in the forums yesterday, and it reminded me that this odd form of ignorance seems to be growing. I haven't delved too far into this besides to see that that most "proof" that the Earth is flat come in the form of nonsensical questions about things like how skyscrapers stand up straight. So my question is, what do people living in this alternate reality answer when asked how a plane can circle the earth and end up where it started? Or why nobody ever comes to the "edge" of the earth? Or what's on the other side of the edge? Or what's containing the edges of the oceans? All these questions seem so elementary it's hard to believe this all isn't global trolling, but there seem to be people who really believe they are uncovering a conspiracy here. For that matter do any of them explain why the "truth" about the Earth's flatness is being hidden? It seems like you can make a better case for things with no proper evidence at all like bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. This aggressive embrace of anti-science is genuinely disturbing... it feels like the roots of the plot to The Omega Man or something.

It's a hopeful story and i'm glad that it's working but... He didn't seem to have any fine motor function sooooo... I still wouldn't be able to use a controller with my gimpy right hand.

Which means this tech has a little ways to go before I consider it a success

The body of 25-year-old Akbar was found when local people cut open the seven-metre (23-foot) python after it was found bloated and slithering awkwardly in the village of Salubiro, on the eastern island of Sulawesi on Monday.

Have you ever looked at the average freshmen course load at a conservatve/xtian college?

Flat Earth Theory 101
Phrenology 101
Alchemy 101
Mysticism 101
etc.

Anti-science is easy to understand. There's a reason the expression 'over half the people you meet are of below average intelligence' is absolutely true. It's probably more like 3/4's at least. Reasoning is hard. Attributing everything to a deity(s) is easy. I remember George Carlin doing a bit on this. You could run over a kid backing out of the driveway but it's ok because it was obliviously "God's will". It absolves people of any personal responsibility. The earth is flat, global warming is a hoax, there are no real problems in the world, there is a god, etc. It's all just so much easier than dealing with the harsh realities of cold and unsympathetic Universe.

Glad you brought up The Omega Man as I haven't watched that in a while. I'll have to bust that out soon. Love that flick!

I know the earth is flat. I can see it with mine own eyes.

As for Cates, RIP. I adore Gilbert Grape. It's such a special and unique movie, and Cates was a huge part of what made it work.

Also, glad to hear there's another Wreck It Ralph movie coming. Loved the first one. John C Reilly and Sara Silverman FTW!

Westinghouse goes bankrupt? Somewhere Tesla is dancing. With a pigeon.

About that. Westinghouse was the guy who firmly believed in Tesla's AC model and provided the funding to make it happen.

Though Westinghouse today is a subsidiary of Toshiba.

If anything, he'd be a lot more joyous if Edison's descendant companies all went out of business.

Westinghouse also screwed Tesla out of royalties. The original contract said that Tesla would get a royalty on ever kilowatt generated, but Westinghouse realized this would be a huge amount of money. So he begged Tesla to forfeit the royalties, saying his board would kick him out otherwise. Tesla agreed, as he felt that Westinghouse was the only one who believed in his ideas. Tesla died penniless.

So Tesla agreed of his own volition and accepted the consequences of that decision.

Can't see him getting all that jazzed about Westinghouse Electric Company, which has nothing to do with George Westinghouse and hasn't had for a long time, since Westinghouse's company is now actually CBS.
