I've actually moved to MPC-HC from VLC, as VLC was having issues with h.265 playback (needed to get the VLC nightly builds to work, and they were always a crapshoot).

I installed MPC-HC as an add-on with the k-lite codec pack, so it's always "just worked", but I don't know if that's because of k-lite, or MPC-HC, but all in all I like it better than VLC.

I used to be a huge fan of MPC, but went to VLC a while back and never looked back. Its interface might not be as polished, but not having to worry about dodgy CODEC packs more than made up for it.

Pretty sure the newer MPC-HC releases have pretty much killed the need to deal with codecs. I don't think I've done the codec-pack-shuffle in years, and I know I've reinstalled Windows a couple times since then...

That's the whole point of MPC-HC (and VLC) is to have everything built in and not have to hunt down CODECs. VLC is so unstable, I've stuck with MPC-HC.

Must have been a pretty long while back, because MPC-HC had back in 2012 already it's own filters (LAV) and even before FFDshow was never dodgy in the slightest.

And MPC is not the same as MPC-HC btw

My MPC-HC setup is via MadVR so I am the super minority use case though..
