I used to live in the SF Bay Area and it was too expensive for my wife and I to start a family there, so we moved to San Diego. That was great until our family grew, and we couldn't afford a house big enough while still being in a good school district. So we moved to Austin, which is just about perfect other than the state officials who want the story of Noah's Ark taught in History class.
Bottom line is, if it's too expensive where you're at, simply move! There are tech jobs everywhere.
