Mass Effect Andromeda Promises "Totally Softcore Space Porn"

BioWare responds to a couple of fan questions following a post a few weeks ago on the BioWare Social Network Fan Forums revealing an "M" ESRB rating for Mass Effect Andromeda (thanks VG247). The rating says the game includes partial nudity and strong sexual content, and Aaryn Flynn tweets a reply to a query about this, saying "Yes it's totally softcore space porn." When asked if he was trolling his followers, he follows up with a tweet saying simply, "Oh I'm not."

These type of things in games, just like in movies always makes me go why?

If I wanted to see a long drawn out romance sequence, I would watch porn. They just need to show enough that people go "ok they had sex"

You watch porn for long drawn out romance sequences? Porn has romance sequences??

All porn is a long drawn out romance sequence. It might not be your definition of "Romance", but 50 shades of grey sales really tell you what peoples definitions are.. hah

I have a friend who reads a lot of pulp romance novels. She enjoys it, and says its a guilty pleasure. She has admitted that the "50 Shades of Grey" is probably the worst drek they ever pulped out of those printing presses. She says the only reason why it got popular was because unlike the usual pulp romance novels, the cover they used on "50 shades" made it look like an ordinary novel, so chicks could read it on the bus, or train or whatever without embarassement while it was basically an adolescent dominance fetish fantasy romance, that had even badly written sex scenes. Hah.

The Witcher was just generally handled in a very mature "adult" way. I don't think that say Dragon Age reached the same level of maturity. I'd Say dragon age was like PG-13, while the witcher was R. We need more R games that are thoughtfully produced, and not just the "GTA" R-rated games which almost feel like they're being subversive because they can.

Well, The Witcher, as in The Witcher 1, was kind of that way. The one with the trading cards of naked ladies. That's why Fion singled out 2 and 3, I think.

By "totally soft core space porn" I guess they are saying that there won't be a dialog choice for your romantic interest that says, "Care to go fisting behind the Mako?"

After playing Fallout: New Vegas I think I'll avoid fisting in my video games. ^_^

We're okay with as much profanity as we can handle in games.

We're okay with getting smashed or high in games.

We're okay with loading clip after clip and emptying them into enemies–human, alien, zombies, whatever.

And we're going to buck at a little fucking?

What a strange lot we gamers are.

Someone on the first page said it's a shame Bioware has come to this? Come to what? Writing romance and sex into games with exploration, adventure and violence? Yes, it would be a shame to see that in entertainment. I'm certainly glad Game of Thrones doesn't delve into any of those things. Or Mad Men. Or music. Or thousands of other types of media.

I don't think it's remiss to say this: it's an M-rated title. Stop putting sex on a fucking pedestal and recognize that it's an acceptable focus for video games. Grow up.

They did say they were taking a few pages out of Witcher 3. However I hate to see they did this only to say, we got it too, just like witcher did! Witcher did it I felt tastefully in that when it occurred, it was awesome and felt part of the storyline. It was like Geralt was just macking it as he encountered some beauties on his way, but always keeping his eye on the main prize, lol.

Will be interesting to see what ppl say about this game. Dragon age Inquisition sounded good but I never played it. Going to prob skip this one too unless it's outstanding.

IMHO you cannot show a representation of life without it also involving sex... it's so intrinsic to our being. Having love interests and sex scenes helps us to connect to the story and the character we are playing. I for one am glad Witcher 2 & 3 helped remove the stigma of sex scenes in games designed for adults, and showed that they could be done with maturity & style. Sure there's some digital nudity in there but these scenes are about the characters, how they connect, how they show their affection, not the sex itself.

There's a huge difference between the sex scenes in say Witcher 3 and God of War's grunting and head-board banging. Just like the Witcher series, Mass Effect is a character driven RPG and hopefully ME:A takes initiative from the Witcher and makes the sex scenes about the characters, not the sex.

Lets not forget these games are also rated Mature.

Well said.

It continues to baffle me as to why our culture accepts gruesome gratuitous violence, but the act of love it too much for the public's gentle eyes to bear.

Fucking religion's grip on the moral fabric of our civilization sickens me.

Also, having just finished FFXV, I can say without reservation (but with a twinge of irony): "OH THANK GOD ME:A IS RATED M"

Wonder when these fools realize romance doesn't end after a fuck and the relationship develops further after the first time.

Probably more to do with the quality of the writers and the designers trying to implement interactions, definitely not the best, but serviceable sci-fi action schlock is the main jist of the games. Romance feels tacky or maybe "fan-fiction"-esque in their games. Obviously Bioware Devs are in or were in relationships themselves, so not sure why the 'romance' bits are kind of meh.

So basically the same cringe-worthy stuff in Mass Effect 1 through 3. Got it. Almost about the same stuff you'll find on TV - "oh look boobs."

If I wanted my porn to be relatable to me, it would have to show the woman totally disgusted and slapping the guy across the face as he crys because he can't perform.

Fair enough we all have our stories in the big city. That was mine.

The "romance" in every BioWare title is about as considered and mature as a group of fifth graders snickering at the utterance of "penis" during a sex ed class.

Truer words have never been spoken.
