You elect the GOP and live in a GOP run state and that's what you get. Simple solution, move to a better state.

You may not have noticed that Republicans now control the entire country. Buh-bye net neutrality.

Net Neutrality is EVIL.

Okay I'll bite, why is it evil to say ISPs have to treat all traffic as equal? You pay for a certain bandwidth, why should an ISP decide what traffic it'll actually deliver to you at the bandwidth you paid for and which traffic to slow down? If you're paying for it shouldn't you get to use it as you want?

Dude wtf? Timmeh is like almost the biggest troll on this site. He bombs the shit out these boards with the most braindead innane shit possible. Usually along corporate fascist lines, that gets even the right wingers riled up...

I know, but curiosity got the better of me.

So what two other regulations did they remove? Oh wait, you mean Trumps rules don't go all the way down to states and cities? Please don't tell him this, he needs some rest tonight.

Derp alert, Virginia's governor is a very liberal Democrat.

From the article and the upstream links, the governor threatened to veto the bill earlier (it's been revised since then), and the bill was introduced by a Republican. But one of those articles also says this vote wasn't divided along partisan lines.

A look at the voting record shows Republicans voted 79%/21% for the bill, while Democrats voted 66%/34%. So there's a lean, but both parties were generally voting for the bill, although if it were just Democrats it would be right on the edge to override a veto.

The bill hasn't gone to the Virginia Senate or the governor yet.

As a utility it would raise prices, destroy competition and innovation. What utilities have competition?

It would not raise prices. It would quite literally do the opposite because you wouldn't be feeding Comcasts pockets as much as you would pay yearly in taxes. Also, for the same reason your electric rates don't triple in the summertime, better oversight and regulation also stops things like internet fast lanes from becoming a reality.

We need people to stop pretending like there is "competition" amongst broadband providers that is somehow holding down prices. There is already little to no competition. Having 2 choices doesn't really qualify. If you walked into a Best Buy and there were only 2 different TV's on the shelf that worked in your area you wouldn't call that a highly competitive industry.

Making it a public utility doesn't magically take it all away from the corporations who built it, it merely subsidizes them to maintain and deploy it and regulates prices changes. It makes providing internet service a less attractive industry for corporations who would seek to gouge consumers. It forces industries to do what they do better to increase profits because they can't directly control the rates they charge. This fosters innovation much more than matching the price of one other regional competitor.

We are already subsidizing these corporations without reaping any benefit from it. It's time to change that.

Neither the dems nor repubs refuse to do the right thing. Dems want to destroy competition and hand it over to the ultra paranoid government. Repubs want to destroy competition and hand it over to the rapaciously greedy duopoly mega corporations.

So allow both private and public service. Problem solved.
