Titanfall 2 Colony Remake Plans

A post on the Titanfall website has an interview with Griffin Dean, designer of the upcoming Live Fire game mode recently announced for Titanfall 2. They offer a roadmap saying this will come to the mech shooter sequel next month to be followed in March with the release of Colony, a remake of the popular map from the original Titanfall. Colony will be included in a "doozy" of an update which will also include new Titans and cosmetics, new features, balance tweaks, and bug fixes. Respawn also promises more free content to come after that without going into specifics. The post kicks off with this "state of the game" evaluation:
It’s hard to believe that we’re coming up on three months since we launched Titanfall 2. It’s gone by fast and a lot has happened. To kick things off I wanted to share a couple “state of game” facts that we’ve seen since launch:

  • Titanfall 2 has been included in over 130 Game of the Year/Best of 2016 lists including Amazon, Yahoo, and Entertainment Weekly
  • Titanfall 2 was named Game of the Year by Forbes, and Best Shooter of 2016 by PC Gamer
  • Attrition is our most popular game mode [big surprise right!?] followed by Bounty Hunt and Amped Hardpoint.
  • Our DAU [Daily Active Users] curve since launch has shown great momentum. Thanks to positive word of mouth and a steady influx of new players every month we’re seeing positive growth that we will continue to cultivate with new updates and content.

While we are very happy with how Titanfall 2 has been performing, we’re not resting on our laurels. We’ve got lots more work to do in the coming months to keep supporting the game.

Everyone is talking about the SP. Anyone willing to expand on the multiplayer though? Does it have dedicated servers? If so what kind are they? (Player admined or not) What type of gameplay types? How is the skill level of the game? Is it more of a traditional type of game, with weapon pickups or is it loadout based? Most importantly does it have "legs"?

It has instanced servers with match making, there's only one active mode on PC - attrition which is 6v6 with bots. Forget any of the other modes as you'll never get a game going unless you have a group of people to play with.

The worst part is they divide the access of the player population via "data centers" without exposing how many players are active on said data center. So if you pick Dallas for your data center you have no idea how many people are connected to it, I'm not sure why you should even need to do this in the first place as it should pool everyone in US to that player base and EU people to another.

Titanfall 2 is actually a great game, makes me a little sad I missed out on the first one, even though it died a quick multiplayer death.

Hopefully they put it on sale a couple of times, and server populations get a boost, it's the most enjoyable DM type FPS I've played in awhile.

If it had MP bots, I would have bought it. They would have been able to keep selling it.

Maybe they'll make it F2P, and you'll see the server population increase.

Come on, be reasonable. It's a AAA FPS game, it's not up for F2P nonsense. ESPECIALLY considering they're giving away all the DLC for free. This should be applauded, and not scoffed at saying that it should be F2P.

The point is the original TF is a three year old, MP only game with no player base. In order to make it relevant and popular again, they would need to do something radical like F2P.

Wait, are you talking about TF1 now? I think that's like $5 on grey market sites, practically F2P.

The issue isn't with their distribution or monetization, that's all fine.

The issue is players, which is probably 1 of 2 things:

1) Players have just had "one COD too many" and have mentally checked out of new futuristic FPS arena stuff.

2) Players genuinely don't like the combat. It does require more skill and thought per minute than any other FPS I can think of "brain actions per minute"? And perhaps this is simply too high a bar for the majority of gamers who didn't grow up on quake, and instead grew up on COD. "the lost generation".

Yeah, sorry about the confusion. Someone downthread had mentioned TF1, I thought I was responding to that thread.

Dedicated servers, yes. You build loadouts in advance, both for your pilot and for your titan. No pickups of any kind. It has legs for months, since you can upgrade to level 50, then regenerate 10 times. Regenerating only gets you cosmetic upgrades but it's there if you want it.

You'll run into all sorts of skill levels, but many players are quite good. My guess is unless you are a wizard, you'll be challenged. Team DM is popular, and a variant on it where you have to deposit money earned from kills. There are control point maps, and a few other modes that most people don't play. One cool one that I wish got more love is "Last Titan Standing", in which everyone starts in a titan and from there it's like the title says.

Matches are short, so you can play a little or a lot, which I like. As for how a match goes, everyone starts out as a pilot. As you get kills, or just as time passes, a meter builds that will earn you your titan. You get into it and stomp around, laying waste. You get blown up, the cycle repeats. It's great. This game is not to be missed if you like FPS, and it's the closest you'll get to Shogo in this day and age.

Well, you heard correctly about the single player. It's short and sweet, you could easily finish it in about 4-5 hours, I think, maybe even less if you burn through it. I leisurely strolled through it in about 6 hours I believe.

The focus of the game is definitely the multiplayer, if you aren't interested in doing small team DM style games(there are other modes, but the vast majority of the population plays the DMish mode with Titans, 6v6 and some bot humans and small mechs on each team.), this might not be the game for you.

I feel like, in the past years, I've played more FPS games that just won't end than more that I felt ended way too soon. 4-5 is short, but I've become a believer that 8-10 is the sweet spot, 12 being fine, and anything longer being usually really annoying. Unless it's open world.

I also don't really bother paying full price, so if I paid $15 for 4-5 really good hours, I'd be ok with that.

Must have been a short blow. They should do a spin-off single player only game with as much sp content as Doom offered. This is what I am hoping for.

Singleplayer is overblown, it has some cool set pieces but the "story" element is pretty damn weak. In a magazine interview with the devs they had people sit down with the editor and make something "cool", they then took these level ideas and stitched them into a game.

I think people that say they're blown away by the singleplayer are falling for the nostalgia like feelings. Some of the levels evoke memories from games like Portal and Half Life.

There's only one word to describe the multiplayer on PC, Dead. They should add a PvE mode where you can play the maps online/offline with drop in multiplayer co-op against AI.

oh there's SOOOOO many call-outs to other famous FPS games in the SP campaign... I'm surprised I haven't seen a youtube video categorizing them all, as it's dense with references.

If I read correctly, nobody's claiming Titanfall 2 is dead. Titanfall 1, however...

I definitely think it's the bond between Titan and Pilot that make players so emotionally attached to the SP. The protagonist's Titan is so adorable <3

It's an element that is sorely missed in many games, I think: a companion the protagonist has a deep bond with.
I'm OK with it being all scripted. When's the last time we had a game where we the players felt extremely sad or angry when something bad happens to a companion? There's only so many games out there where you have to... say, save a person from a fucked up situation and you ACTUALLY give a shit.
Strangely, I'm thinking of Alpha Protocol.
