Out of the Blue

We have an upcoming appointment with the windshield repair folks after a piece of gravel shot out from under the tire of another car an hit the windshield. This leaves me impressed by the engineering of shatterproof glass, as while this did leave a nasty crack, it is contained to an area less than an inch around, and doesn't seem to be spreading as we wait on the repair. This is after an impact that sounded like we were hit by a bullet. I'm guessing there must've been a time when an incident like this would leave those in the car with faces full of glass shards, which would probably be an adventure. As it is, this is estimated as a $60 repair that should take under an hour.

Why auto glass service isn't all it's cracked up to be

Same stuff when I was an apprentice 25 years ago basically. Back then it was an influx of stuff from Mexico. Luckily we haven't seen a relapse in things like the tire rim plague, where transport truck rims would fail so spectacularly that they would shatter, or the rims would sheer off(the center remained bolted in), and the entire thing would get flung down the highway. Several people in Ontario were killed because of that.

But there is still the huge and I do mean huge problem with train cars across North America and failures(causing derailments/spills) of wheels, axles, and journal boxes(basically the wheel hub). Those cases are all shitty mexican made parts from the 1990/early 00's. Most rail companies have spent the last 10-20 years and hundreds of millions replacing them on everything from boxcars to tanker cars. There's also been cases of side frame failures, where they simply bend and the entire wheel assembly gets ejected. Which is really good at 60 miles an hour.

Nice. Yes you should definitely fine tune the settings on that, think of how much time it will save you once it's done. I bet your work area is a little cluttered too you should probably pick that up, but you're going to need to figure out a new more efficient filing system so you can easily find stuff you put away... should probably research that on the internet, after you've organized your favorites by names that sound most edible to least edible. /procrastinationpro

This reminds me of a time I was asked to tutor a relative (by marriage) in learning the English language. As soon as we sat down at a table, I swear he would spend the first 15 minutes arranging his pencils, organizing his paperwork, and fiddling around with a bunch of notes before we could ever get started.

I believe that's the price to repair the crack. The insurance company says they will cover replacing the windshield if it comes to that.

Windshield replacement is one of those things that have gotten very easy and affordable. Good! Mentioning Insurance covering it, I would be impressed you have a policy that has that low of a deductible to even come into play or perhaps you drive something exotic.

Car windshields haven't been shatterable like that for decades, and that's because of the giant sheet of plastic that's between the two layers of glass. And said insurance company is happier to fix a rock-strike, and in many cases at least here in Canada for nothing. The last windshield I had replaced cost me $200(deductible), the actual cost of the windshield was just shy of $1100.

Just a heads up to people who don't know, the windshield is considered a "structural component" of the vehicle. Which is one of the reasons you should get it repaired. But just be glad you don't live in various part of Canada, because rock strikes are so common that windshield's aren't covered in your insurance policy. And can drive the cost up monthly by $400-800. Where the same policy in say Ontario would be $70-80/mo including repair/replace.

I don't know that I would be kneeling a few scant yards away to take a picture of it. Gators are relatively chill, and I've been close to many wild ones, but you never want to limit your ability to flee should they take offense to your presence.

I watched a marble-sized rock fly across from the oncoming direction on the freeway, over the divider and directly into the center of my windshield a little less than a year ago. I remember seeing it so clearly, and it was almost dead on at me, so it looked like slow motion. When it hit, and I'm thankful it wasn't on my paint, it left a really nice circular spiderweb with a slight horizontal crack. Two days later, it had spread across 80% of the width of the windshield. Holy crap. Ended up replacing it and paying the difference for OEM glass and sealant. The insurance company will only pay for the cheaper, thinner glass and crappy-tier sealant.

I believe it cost me something like $400, but it was worth it to me.

this happened to a buddy of mine some years ago... then it happened again about a week later... wouldnt have believed it if i wasnt there when it happened

that second time.. man he was pissed - you could see the rock get kicked up by the semi in front of us he was like "no no nO NO NO!! FUCK!!!" Rotfl

Reminds me of what happened a few years ago to me. Instead of a rock though it was a chunk of truck tire. Saw a piece get flipped into the air about 3 - 4 car lengths ahead of me. Watched it "float" and flip through the air, tried to avoid it best I could , unfortunately it still managed to take out my driver side mirror.

That makes a lot more sense, I didn't think $60 would cover the cost of the actual windshield let alone the labor. Good to hear your insurance will cover replacement if needed.
