Out of the Blue

Pretty sad about my Giants losing yesterday. They got off to a great start, but the failure to be able to capitalize on that killed them. If not for a boatload of dropped passes, they might have been able to dictate the game better and come up with the upset. Oh well, as disgraced analyst Warren Sapp was fond of saying, if ifs and buts were candies and nuts, every day would be Christmas. I got the first three games right, but my loyalty to and confidence in the G-men has destroyed my playoff bracket, so good luck to all who are still in the running.

If the astronomers and astrophysicists are right, something way more exciting will happen prior to that... the merging of the Milky Way with the Andromeda galaxy. Now THAT is something I would love to see.

Hmm, haven't seen that behavior on Chrome. Screenshot? Browser version?

5 years from now we should be able to see a red nova in the sky without assistance of two stars colliding 1800 years ago. That is awesome

i'll be surprised if it comes true. predicting novas? when we can't even predict earthquakes? but i hope i'm wrong. i bought a $700 telescope setup just for occasions like this =D

Not sure if that's irony but...I'll bite. Predicting a Nova in this situation is far easier than predicting an earthquake ever will be. Stellar processes are fairly well understood, at least in theoretical terms, and up to a point. This is how we know that our Sun for example, will not go Nova for at least several billion years, if at all. In the case from the article, there are two binary stars involved which have been observed for some time. According to their orbital motions they will definitely collide in some way in 5 years time, the resulting collision will result in an ejection of stellar mass, I.E. a Nova.

What browser? Did you upgrade it lately? I'm using the most recent Waterfox and I have no problems.

D'OH! Do other languages have as many homonyms, or is that something unique to English?

Edit: A little of Google says... apparently so. And also by/buy is technically a homophone, not a homynym. Homonyms are words that are both spelled and pronounced the same, but have different meanings. As opposed to homographs (spelled the same) or homophones (pronounced the same).

My brain had some trouble registering your misspelling. For a quick second it thought, 'Someone bought a Starbuck's barista... well there are some cute ones.'

I thought the Giants v. Packers game was the hardest to call of the lot (pretty sure I got all of my picks for this round). Both teams have played somewhat inconsistently this year, so it was hard to tell which team was going to show up. With the exception of the Houston, New England game, the matches this upcoming weekend all have a good chance of being quite epic.
