Steam Top 100 of 2016

Steam News announces that Valve is offering a Top 100 bestsellers of 2016 list showing the top games of the year, measured by gross revenue. The list is based on total revenues during the calendar year, and comes on the final day of the annual Steam Winter Sale. They don't disclose any dollar figures, or specific ranks, but rank the results as Platinum for the first thru 12th best seller, Gold for 13-24, Silver for 25-40, and bronze for the rest. Here are the platinum sellers they list as the dozen bestselling titles for the year, which we do not believe are in any particular order:

  • Rocket League
  • Tom Clancy's The Division
  • Dota 2
  • Total War: WARHAMMER
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Civilization VI
  • No Man's Sky
  • Fallout 4
  • XCOM 2
  • Dark Souls III
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
  • The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

I'd also like to see that compared to the top 100 returns of 2016 (no, I don't expect that we ever will). I'd be willing to bet that No Man's Sky appearance on this list would be offset a bit.

If the list is based on total revenue, then it may be offset by returns already. Besides, it takes more than 2 hours to find out there are only 4 hours of gameplay.

All it really needs is a "creation kit" so i can mod all the crap outta the game

that should have been their highest priority as soon as the hype train started going off the rails, back when it was announced.. because if they had released something like that along with the game, it could have prevented much of the backlash or at least softened it to a huge degree

They should have had an open beta, and not kept so much stuff secret.

Still, I blame the rubes for buying into the hype and not waiting for reviews. It's simple people: in the digital age, there's no need to pre-order, there's no need to buy on the first day. Wait for reviews, then make an informed decision.

its been happening for decades already... im just surprised it took this long for something to be "the example".. how many times did Molyneux already pull this shit? and there were tons of other games that went the same way

its says far more about the state of the culture of modern gaming than anything to do with "hype" or "suckers" or whatever, which is a type of clearly noticeable shit thats been happening since the dawn of time

I think the most amazing part about it is that it had no legs, so it was one of the top selling games even though it's sales window only lasted a week or so.

Great to see XCOM 2 on there. I had guessed it did pretty well, but didn't realise it did Above CoD well.

I'm cool with ever game being on that list except No Mans Sky. It's a huge piece of shit and the developers should be in jail over it.

The list of the 12 "platinum" titles is the same if you reload. As I noted, they do not seem to be in any particular order, and the order changes on return viewings.

Hell that website/page is awful, could only be worse is it were images randomly scattered around with some repeating to keep you on your toes.

The only thing to take away from this tease of a "list", is the presence of certain games in the same "group" or higher than others. Such as a DRM free game being in the top group unlike a Denuvo protected game. Or how some of those small indie games are amongst or higher than AAA money sinks.

For that price it's awesome. If you 100% the game it should take you many many hours and it's fun.

I actually recommend not going for 100% completion in Mad Max. The game is extremely formulaic and if you go for 100%, you'll probably get burned out before completing the story missions. It's better to focus on the story missions and dabble in the optional stuff along the way.

yeh this is true

also this game would have been an awesome platform for that mechanic they had in the Lord of Rings game with the Orc Chieftans and all that stuff... its too bad nobody tried to reuse that formula or improve on it, seems like it had some potential

I enjoyed the 100%. The way the game is setup and the layout of the world, it actually works better than other games. And the upgrades do help a ton as you progress. (82 hours to 100% and I screwed around A LOT)
