Diablo Turns 20

Battle.net has more on the 20th anniversary of Diablo, as the original version of the action/RPG was first released on December 31, 1996. They will be launching their previously announced celebrations across various game soon, and on the meantime, offer a retrospective, including this video with a look back. Here's what they have to say:
December 31 marks the official twentieth anniversary of the original Diablo!

We’ll soon be launching Patch 2.4.3, which includes an anniversary event filled to the brim with fun callbacks to the game that started it all. Before we kick off the in-game celebration, we wanted to look back at some of our favorite memories from Sanctuary.

For some, that means late nights doing Baal runs, getting that last Conquest in Seasons, or finally getting an Archangel’s Staff of the Apocalypse to drop. Others may never forget the terror of encountering the Butcher for the first time, gruelingly defeating Duriel, or getting killed by Malthael (and then returning the favor). . . .

Whether you first played Diablo two days or two decades ago, we want to thank you for bringing your unrelenting passion to the franchise. Your support and feedback continue to help us shape the world of Sanctuary, and it’s a true honor and privilege to walk alongside you on this journey.

As the hour of Diablo’s first reign of terror approaches, we’ll be pouring a glass of our favorite brew in his honor. We hope you do the same, and want to again express how thankful we are for your support.

May your loot be Legendary, and may you forever be victorious in battle. Cheers, nephalem!

I don't get this post. Diablo was awesome. So was D2 and it's expansion. D3, not so much.

Action RPG genre is really the action game genre, if you look at combat mechanics of diablo 2 it's really just god of war/3D action game with a fixed camera angle. You check out games like champions of norath for the PS2 or Baldurs gate dark alliance, basically the "ARPG" genre is really just beat-em-up genre /w more limited move sets and fixed camera angle.

I didn't really like torchlight 2 all that much the combat left a lot to be desired, what diablo 2 did is gave classes "moves" like an action or fighting game. I found torchlight 2's classes underwhelming. PoE has good RPG elements but it's combat is a bit weak but it's the best ARPG on the market that tries to capture what diablo 2 did.

Basically Magicka IMHO is the best ARPG on the market, aka it's got great wizard fighting without the loot grind. The fighting in macgicka is just excellent.

Fuck this casual monkey clickfest garbage with a hot spiky metal rod sans lubrication. This shitfest was and is a bane on the true RPG genre. This should have never even been associated with RPGs. It should have gotten its own "For monkeys and 4 year olds" genre. That would have saved the RPG genre a lot of disgrace that was brought upon it by lame Diablo clones or the feeble attempts to add Diablo flavor to what could have become good real RPGs. It's the 20 year anniversary of the decline of the RPG genre. The only people retarded enough to celebrate this shit are Blizztard of course.

Forget Diablo. Path of Exile and Grim Dawn have taken up the torch.

Can say the same thing about what Blizzard did to the MMO genre.

MMO's were great before WOW came along and turned in them into lame, grindy, carebear trash.

Admittedly, their skills at making console games for PC's is unmatched.

Congrats, how much is the Necromancer DLC for D3 going to be?

I got the d3 itch again last week. Necro can't come soon enough. Guess I'll finally try seasons at least once, once they come to the ps4 (season 10, I believe).

I think they are aiming for 'late' 2017 for the Character pack with the Necromancer in it, but there is supposedly a somewhat large patch coming this month. A couple former D3 people I used to group with also got sucked in by this marketing, and will probably go back for awhile. Breaking up my Grim Dawn/KF2 groups!!

I cannot recommend Grim Dawn/Path of Exile enough though, if you are fiending for some ARPG gameplay. Either one is far superior to what Diablo 3 is now, in terms of complexity and class building. Of course D3 still has the best engine but... the rest is lacking.

All that said, I may eventually get the Necromancer, if they give 2 more character slots with that DLC, and the price isn't ridiculous. If I have to delete my mothballed characters, forget it.
