Out of the Blue

Happy National Fruitcake Day! I actually tend to like fruitcake, but I haven't had any in a really long time, so I may not feel that way if I had some right now. Holiday foods aside, we had a rare visit to the movies on Christmas, as we went to see Rogue One. I can see why the reviews on this are mixed, as I have mixed feelings about it myself. There were parts I loved, and parts I didn't, but on balance the experience was positive, and I was happy to have seen it, and happy to have made the effort to do so in the theater. But I also just like movies in general, so in the same way I wouldn't be a good video game critic, I wouldn't be a good movie critic. Also, I probably would have considered the movie enjoyable if they just had Alan Tudyk's part surrounded by footage of cows grazing, so you may not want to go by me.

when it comes to celebrities and rock stars who are well known for living a fast life - "heart failure" is generally caused by overdose, and heroin is easily the most effective drug at doing that

btw

From 2014 to 2015, heroin overdose death rates increased by 20.6%, with nearly 13,000 people dying in 2015.

K-2 kind of reminded me of HK-47 from the Old Republic, very endearing in its own way. Actually I think my biggest issue was I found the side characters more interesting than the two central characters; I kept wanting the scene to switch from Jyn and/or Cassian to one of the other guys.

I'm really sad this morning. Carrie Fisher died. She didn't survive her heart attack. Her death hit me way more than George Michael. 2016 is officially the worse year ever.

subjectively - it certainly seems like 2016 had the most celebrity deaths of any year... ever? Gotta wonder if thats just due to having more celebrities around, or what.. but yeh - shit was crazy

I wonder if someone counted it all up and did some comparative research

The BBC did a brief, unscientific study that shows a steady increase in celebrity deaths. I suspect it's because about 60 years ago when television started to become influential the number of celebrities, particularly young adults, increased. So it's only going to get worse. Happy Holidays everyone.

Yeah, I didn't want to mention this yesterday, but he had a history of drug abuse, and I suspected it a factor in the death from heart failure of a fairly young athletic otherwise healthy person.

It seems like there weren't more celebrities, but more well known celebrities who went "before their time". I love Star Wars so it's sad to see her go, she seemed like a pretty cool lady to boot. I seem to remember some interview an awkward British fan did with her in her house. Unfortunately I can't seem to find it, but it was really a great off the cuff moment. Unfortunately search results are coming up with nothing

right, it seems like an expected result going forward... so it will be interesting to compare this year with the next 10

Although there does seem to have been an inexorable rise, Serpell says there hasn't been any change in the BBC's policy on what sort of person qualifies for an obituary.
He thinks that the increase isn't particularly surprising, because we're now half a century on from the flourishing of both TV and pop culture in the 1960s, which massively expanded the overall pool of public figures.

It probably is more. There are definitely more celebs than ever before.

I think one thing that's happening this year is that a bunch of very famous celebs died younger than expected, so the impact is greater than usual.

Also, these are the celebs of our generation, the celebs we grew up watching and listening to. It's going to be more shocking to us than when Elizabeth Taylor or Paul Newman passed away. I expect it to continue in this vein somewhat.

As someone who's had a couple of friends die from heroin ODs and drug related complications I know that story all too well. There is just no upside to it. I really wish people could find a better way to alleviate whatever problems they're having and stay away from that shit. Much as I disagree with prohibition on almost anything illegal, heroin is the one thing I do not.

I wish big pharma could come up with a non-addictive recreational drug that didn't kill people. Obviously people want to do this, so we should find some way of making it safe.
