Descent: Underground in Development on GOG.com

Descent: Underground is now available on GOG.com as an "in development" title, which sounds like early access with a less descriptive label. This means the 6DoF shooter is for sale on their DRM-free marketplace as it is being completed. This includes GOG Galaxy support for cross-play multiplayer and a 50% launch discount that will last until January 21st. The news is illustrated by this in development trailer, and here are the details:
The ups the downs, and brutal takedowns of mining in space.

Descent: Underground, the thrilling return of the first-person space shooter with 360 degrees of freedom, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com, with GOG Galaxy support for cross-play multiplayer and a 50% launch discount.

The legendary Descent is back and it takes you deep underground! Built on Unreal Engine 4 and improving upon the intoxicating flight mechanics of the originals, it brings the fight to the most perilous corners of space, where only the bravest or most desperate pilots venture in search of lucrative mining opportunities. Customize your ship and team up with friends for some fast-paced arcade action, spinning and swerving freely through twisting corridors as you gun down your opponents.

Descendant Studios, the people committed to bringing back this beloved franchise, are planning on adding a slew of neat features throughout the In Development stage: more ship types, weapons, and gadgets, more ways to interact with your environment, single player story missions, and tons of other cool additions.

Jump into your agile spaceship, calibrate your blasters, and dive into Descent: Underground, DRM-free on GOG.com.

The 50% discount will last until January 21, 1:59 PM UTC.

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.

You sir are preaching to the choir. Loved the Arena based stuff in the originals but firmly believe that in order for the new generation of gamers to love it like we did, they will want more - which is why we have 9 ships, all with special abilities and roles to play, we have a variety of game play from survival, to co-op to Miner Mayhem(CTF), Conquest, and Vs bots. In addition to the Single Player campaign we are currently working on which resets the entire universe and sets up our 5 phase 10 year plan in action. Eventually we hope that the fighting in tunnels is PART of a grander Universe.

While we can't compete on a tiny budget with large games, we can make a great smaller scope game that ties into something bigger and that has been our goal all along.

It just gets a little taxing sometimes seeing people trying to start a war between our game and others, when none exists - in all honesty to bring 6Dof back from the grave it is going to take several games and probably also a good console release too - something we would like to do, but currently don't have the money or time to make it happen....but we do have plans......

Oh, and one more thing - we are deploying a NEW build right now with some new features...and a first pass training mission....enjoy!

Dammit, an impassioned Indie Dev posting in a thread about his own game on Bluesnews... now I have to buy this and the other Descent remake.

Good luck, WingmanDU, it's looking really good so far.

Steam store seems to be hammered still, but I'm not really into the Gog Galaxy client(required for multiplayer?) hrm... should I finally break down and install Galaxy? *ponders.*

Thanks, you can always skip both places and get it on our own store at www.descentunderground.com

some people just talk big with nothing to back it up. thanks for actually making a game instead of posting on forums full time like the rest of us

Woah - as one of those so called "Hacks" let's be real here. Before we came along Descent was wallowing in the sock drawer of Interplay, we loved the original, wanted to bring it back, or at least the type of game, so started to make "Ships That Fight Underground" or STFU for short, and were contacted by Interplay to license the name and make it an actual Descent game - we were OVERJOYED and jumped at the chance.

So, we all took a massive risk to bring back an IP that most gamers under 30 have no idea existed.

Calling us HACKS for taking a risk to bring back something we loved is insulting to say the least.

We are also fans of Overload - and backers - there is not a zero sum game here, we can all win by having more and more 6Dof games to play - there is not one winner to rule them all...many people play Battlefield and Call of Duty.

And for the record, we asked Matt and Mike to join us in making this game, but they decided to do their own 6Dof game Overload, and we totally respect that.

Our game is based upon Descent 1 and the flight mechanics and speeds, but we are adding a TON MORE GAME play for a modern audience, instead of one ship we have 9, all with roles to play, and special abilities, unlocks and such - it is a huge undertaking by a small team of developers (around 10), and we are doing it out of passion for the genre.

Please stop this us vs them nonsense, it is unnecessary and we as Devs don't participate in it, we want more good games.

I agree... I think what you have looks good. It must be something to be a developer and if you are reading comments, I hope you all can just take it in stride, internet group think in general is really bad, have to compartmentalize it correctly.

it would be nice to see a lot more physics/terrain dynamics and voxel deformation type games out there... personally i think destructible terrain and all that is the next "big thing" in games, but ive been thinking that for many years now - i thought it would be much more prevalent before the "big thing" of convincing AI and generative plot/story tech

but i think there might be a simple answer in the fact that stuff like the unreal engine and gamecreator type software is so cheap and easy to use, and those things arent voxel based ... also im not sure if voxel engines can be 3d accelerated in the same way as polygonal engines, but maybe thats different now

Oh, man, I loved Magic Carpet. That and Descent were my thing back in the day.

...And I'm still sore over the dev of Arcane Worlds abandoning it. Even if what we saw wasn't great, just the promise of a Magic Carpet-style game got me really excited.

But, I'm really glad that after all these years, Descent-like games are getting a bit of a resurgence.
Retrovirus, Sublevel Zero, NeonXSZ, Overload, and Descent: Underground. My favorite style of FPS gameplay is coming back!

I hear ya, the whole problem is that developers with the talent didn't get enough funds (planetary annihilation) and the hacks behind descent underground are not the developers of the original descent. All the flameouts really come down to the fact that crowdfunding doesn't raise enough funds to make AAA games. I knew PA would fail because an RTS of that scale traditionally required at least 10 million. PA got 2.5 mill.

Overload is being made by the real descent developers.

I would love to see a 'real' company take that style and do something with it.. With the crap ton of voxel/terrain-deformation going on these days, I'm not sure why it hasn't happened... MC had it's drawbacks of course (repetition of all Bullfrog games really), but it could be fun ; )

The rules have changed in the Misinformation Age,
1. Don't pre-order no matter how Shiny the reward.
2. Don't buy the game on day one.
3. Don't back EA/Kickstarter projects.
But DO look both ways before crossing the street.
