The ups the downs, and brutal takedowns of mining in space.
Descent: Underground, the thrilling return of the first-person space shooter with 360 degrees of freedom, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com, with GOG Galaxy support for cross-play multiplayer and a 50% launch discount.
The legendary Descent is back and it takes you deep underground! Built on Unreal Engine 4 and improving upon the intoxicating flight mechanics of the originals, it brings the fight to the most perilous corners of space, where only the bravest or most desperate pilots venture in search of lucrative mining opportunities. Customize your ship and team up with friends for some fast-paced arcade action, spinning and swerving freely through twisting corridors as you gun down your opponents.
Descendant Studios, the people committed to bringing back this beloved franchise, are planning on adding a slew of neat features throughout the In Development stage: more ship types, weapons, and gadgets, more ways to interact with your environment, single player story missions, and tons of other cool additions.
Jump into your agile spaceship, calibrate your blasters, and dive into Descent: Underground, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 50% discount will last until January 21, 1:59 PM UTC.

Sounds cool that was a bit of a vibe I got, resource gathering etc is part of it. The old game was pretty much go through the tubes and pew pew, which was fun then, but something much grander would be cool.

Dammit, an impassioned Indie Dev posting in a thread about his own game on Bluesnews... now I have to buy this and the other Descent remake.![]()
Good luck, WingmanDU, it's looking really good so far.
Steam store seems to be hammered still, but I'm not really into the Gog Galaxy client(required for multiplayer?) hrm... should I finally break down and install Galaxy? *ponders.*

Woah - as one of those so called "Hacks" let's be real here. Before we came along Descent was wallowing in the sock drawer of Interplay, we loved the original, wanted to bring it back, or at least the type of game, so started to make "Ships That Fight Underground" or STFU for short, and were contacted by Interplay to license the name and make it an actual Descent game - we were OVERJOYED and jumped at the chance.
So, we all took a massive risk to bring back an IP that most gamers under 30 have no idea existed.
Calling us HACKS for taking a risk to bring back something we loved is insulting to say the least.
We are also fans of Overload - and backers - there is not a zero sum game here, we can all win by having more and more 6Dof games to play - there is not one winner to rule them all...many people play Battlefield and Call of Duty.
And for the record, we asked Matt and Mike to join us in making this game, but they decided to do their own 6Dof game Overload, and we totally respect that.
Our game is based upon Descent 1 and the flight mechanics and speeds, but we are adding a TON MORE GAME play for a modern audience, instead of one ship we have 9, all with roles to play, and special abilities, unlocks and such - it is a huge undertaking by a small team of developers (around 10), and we are doing it out of passion for the genre.
Please stop this us vs them nonsense, it is unnecessary and we as Devs don't participate in it, we want more good games.

We intend to do exactly this within the Descent Universe, we are rebooting the franchise, but with a small amount of funding we had to do this in phases, this is phase 1, by phase 3 we will all be in space fighting over Alien technology, but we need to be successful in phase 1 etc to have the funding.
We do not have millions of dollars and raman noodles are getting old, real fast.

Why aren't there more modern games like Magic Carpet?
HorrorScope wrote on Dec 21, 2016, 18:40:The future is Forsaken.
FWIW I liked Descent and what was the other one like this? Foresaken that was huge back in the early days of GPU's? Crazy fps's.
Both of the updates talked about in here look pretty good to.

always preferred Magic Carpet ... now that would be a good reboot
Magic Carpets were great games... There have been a few hobby developed attempts over the years, including my own, but they die off before getting anywhere near completion, including my own heh.

Although I have a lot of respect for GOG, I don't think I would back this. I've been burned by a lot of Steam Greenlight games and recently by a couple of EA games sponsored by Greenmangaming. Before that, Star Citizen, Shroud of the Avatar, ArcheAge, Mechwarrior Online to name a few. I'm DONE backing EA/Kickstarter games. I've been burned a few too many times and I only have cold cynicism left in my heart for them.

never got into descent... seemed like a game trying to make the most of its technical limitations (underground tunnels, no physics) but IMO it was not a fun result
always preferred Magic Carpet ... now that would be a good reboot
