Todd Howard Tapped for AIAS Hall of Fame

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences announces Todd Howard of Bethesda Game Studios will be their 22nd Hall of Fame inductee at their 20th awards ceremony in February. Here's part of the announcement:
The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences is pleased to announce its 22nd Hall of Fame recipient, Todd Howard, Executive Producer and Game Director at Bethesda Game Studios, who has created some of the industry’s most successful games by pioneering open-world gameplay. Howard has been integral in the creative direction and growth of such well-loved franchises as The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, which have been recipients of numerous D.I.C.E. Awards throughout the years. Both The Elder Scrolls and Fallout are known for their experiential approach to world-building and storytelling. The scale of their open worlds, variety of questlines, and near-endless cast of characters has ensured no two players have the same experience.

“The Academy is thrilled to be honoring Todd Howard as our next Hall of Fame recipient during our 20th D.I.C.E. Awards celebration,” said Mike Fischer, President, Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. “I know that many of us in the industry have spent countless hours enthralled in the vast, open worlds that Todd has created. He’s made us all reconsider the player-game relationship and extended the storytelling possibilities of our medium. We look forward to honoring Todd and celebrating his achievements and contributions to the video games industry.”

The 2017 Hall of Fame Award will be presented to Howard during the 20th D.I.C.E. Awards ceremony on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at the Mandalay Convention Center in Las Vegas by his long-time colleague, Pete Hines, Vice President of Public Relations and Marketing, Bethesda Softworks.

This is a political award based upon connections rather than merit. Todd Howard is responsible for Bethesda's anti-consumer "you don't need no reviews" policy and has spent years taking credit for the actual work done by other people on Oblivion, Skyrim and the Fallout 3/4 games.

It's been years since he did any actual work and - like John Romero - his contribution is greatly exaggerated.

Yeah, but that's the nature of awards in general. It's 'Well if someone else isn't going to pat us on the back and recognize how awesome we are we'll just do it ourselves.' At least it's not as bad actors and musicians. 50 million different award shows for them every year all over the world. You're already rich and famous, how much of s vain douche can you be?

While I like the setting and IP of elder scrolls, and I'm playing skyrim, i've played oblivion and morrow wind and i just installed daggerfall last night.

I'll say this:

Bethsoft has the right idea when it comes to world building and story but really fucking suck at balancing games and making interesting combat systems.

All their games combat systems suck and are so dull. I have a hard time finishing lots of their games because they start difficult and then the difficulty just gets trivial later on.

It's always a little silly to give a single guy the honors, when it's his entire team's effort, but even so, it's well-deserved.

No, just unfamiliar with games from Bethsoft.
