MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Announced

Piranha Games announces MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, a new installment in the mech combat series. In spite of enduring affection for the franchise, this will be the first single-player MechWarrior game in 15 years. This is being built with Epic's Unreal Engine 4 for release in 2018, but they reassure MechWarrior Online players that a live team will continue to support that game as well. They offer this trailer with around seven minutes of pre-alpha gameplay footage and Twitch has footage of the game livestreamed from the event, though some of the audio is muted because lawyers. Here's the deal:

Piranha Games announced MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries to a packed house of MechWarrior fans tonight via a live stage demo at Mech_Con 2016.

The first standalone single-player MechWarrior title in development for PC in nearly 15 years, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will feature intense PvE ‘Mech combat in an immersive, career-based Mercenary campaign driven by player choice. Featuring an advancing timeline starting in the year 3015, players will adopt the role of a green MechWarrior mercenary thrust into combat as the Third Succession War continues to fracture the Inner Sphere; the vast region of colonized space surrounding Earth. Victory, prestige, and profit will not only require skill on the battlefield, but in the maintenance and enhancement of your BattleMechs.

Set for release in 2018, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is under development by a dedicated and separate development team at Piranha Games using Unreal Engine 4. MechWarrior Online, Piranha’s existing F2P multiplayer-focused tactical ‘Mech combat game (built with CryEngine) will continue its ongoing live development by the MWO team at Piranha.

"Our main goal with MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is to provide fans with a standalone, story-driven single-player experience that allows for a great amount of flexibility in terms of player choice, built on a foundation of the intense, tactical ‘Mech combat the franchise is known for," said Russ Bullock, president of Piranha Games. “Along with the release of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries in 2018 we're going to continue supporting our existing MechWarrior Online game and its fanbase with new updates and regular content releases. MWO is now in its fifth year of development and operation, and there’s still a lot of really cool stuff planned for it. For fans who have been waiting for the return of a true single-player MechWarrior game though, we are really happy to announce MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries."

Why would a light Mech that didn't even exist in the lore at the time, fight one on one toe to toe against a medium Mech? The premise of the video doesn't make sense.

The Raven was introduced in 3024, apparently the game timeline starts in 3015 and goes to 3049. I don't see the problem.

You can get angry about the whys if you want, but if that kind of thing bothers you then video games might not be the right hobby for you.
Maybe. But I think I'm trying to illustrate for those who don't know about PGI, what kind of hacks have the Mechwarrior franchise.

It makes total sense, the light mech would do a couple punch shots and ultimately retreat back to where their brawlers are.. Standing toe to toe isn't smart.

I have a bias against PGI. The shitshow that was MWO which is little more than a Mech buying simulator with team deathmatch, turned me off. The way that Russ Bullock the leader of PGI lied and misrepresented reality, has made me think that he is a hack. So I'm not a fan. I can go into the long litany of lies and misrepresentations but I won't. That trailer is not impressive. Why would a light Mech that didn't even exist in the lore at the time, fight one on one toe to toe against a medium Mech? The premise of the video doesn't make sense. This has all the hallmark of the PGI hacks and Russ Bullock at the helm. PGI has a bad reputation for good reasons, look at their track record. Don't preorder and take what they say and their claims with a grain of salt.

If it comes out, and reviews are good, I'll buy it. I've been waiting decades for a modern version of MW2 or MW2: Mercs. Yes, MWO has had its share of shenanigans, but screwing over founders and making $ purchases of coolant a necessity doesn't really apply to a single player campaign like this one.

Maybe. But I think you're just finding things to bitch about to hear yourself talk. There are plenty of legit arguments out there....but yours were silly.

You mean server-authoritative nonsense that allows levers to curb hacking? That's used in just about every large-scale MMOG in modern gaming? Or Matchmaking? Or a Mechwarrior playerbase that dwarfs all the other MW titles combined? I love the games of yesteryear as well....but we have to take off the rose colored glasses from time to time and recognize that there were issues.
No it's not to hear myself talk but to express my belief that PGI is incapable hack shovelware developer who cannot do justice to the Mechwarrior franchise.

Well I did say I was biased against PGI and try to explain why. Are pilots in the inner sphere suicidal to waste a scout Mech and dead pilot? But I guess what you say is plausible.

They should encourage PGI instead to get better and develop an MP component (in other-words includ dedicated server software and utilize what the Unreal engine offers for that), a staple of every MW game, to MW5 and simply let the players go wild with it making their own servers, game modes, etc.

The only MW game that had player-run dedicated servers was MW4. MW2 and 3 were peer-to-peer -- MW3 was kind of the most peer-to-peer thing ever. The original MW was a singleplayer-only game.

I don't think it's really possible to play MW3 at all nowadays, since the physics were tied to the clock speed or frame rate or something. It goes haywire and sends 'Mechs flying if you try to jump, if you walk on certain hills, or any other time at all.

You know exactly what I mean regardless. Multiplayer without the gimmick of server-authoritative nonsense, purely controlled by players. And yes it is possible to get MW3 working, I have - there's fan support out there for it on the interwebs. Just lots of hoop jumping that most people don't care for.

I think it's just a chip on your shoulder. "OMG if the bad guys had half a brain you'd be dead." And there also wouldn't be a game.

But to look at it again -- a light 'Mech is probably recon, and maybe it didn't know there was a Shadow Hawk on site. Once spotted, a 3025 Raven isn't any faster than a Shadow Hawk, plus I don't think it has jump jets. If it runs it's going to take fire to its rear armor, so it might as well fight and cost the other side some repair money. Or maybe its job was just to keep everyone busy until the dropships arrived.

Also, I think that was just a pre-alpha demo reel. The fight was over in a minute and a half, and "Look at it this way, kid" is a little too on the nose. Complaining about force composition and timeline appropriateness... well, haha, that actually does fit in with the BattleTech fandom. Carry on.

After thinking about it, a wait and see approach may be best. Of course everyone see's "MW5" and rejoices, but PGI doesn't have any of the industry veterans on board in their company as far as I'm aware. I don't understand why they don't try to reach out to those from past titles.

Also as far as the "f2p" fans of MWO, I took a look on their forums and some aren't so pleased thinking MWO will be abandoned. Ok - so let's say MW5 turns out to be above average, not shit (that could be a long shot, I'll give PGI the benefit of the doubt, no pre-order money though, but looking at MWO even basic shit like the menu is shovel-ware tier grade) - I don't understand why the "f2p" fans would even want MWO to continue. They should encourage PGI instead to get better and develop an MP component (in other-words includ dedicated server software and utilize what the Unreal engine offers for that), a staple of every MW game, to MW5 and simply let the players go wild with it making their own servers, game modes, etc.

I see the choice for them as simple, do they want to continue pouring money into a shoddy f2p format, where they don't even own their virtual goods which are on a server somewhere that could be shut down at any time or do they want a product that could last far longer by a traditional model, returning MW back to its roots. I think of it this way - to this very day it is still possible to play MW2, 3, and 4 Mutliplayer - by way of fan support, long after the shelf-life of those games of which are not even sold anymore.

Just type Unreal 4 demo or environmental art test or Crytek not even alpha and tell me if you cant find 10 things that look better then this pile of shite looking "professional" pre-alpha. It is 100% underwhelming. I use this engine everyday, I know what it can do. This is a sad pile of shit. Even the death animation of that mech is 100% sad, no parts fly off, no location based animations or rigged body effects, plays a bad animations and they throw a few emitters on it. I could write 20 pages on how bad this demo is. Hey just so you know I want it to be good it is not.

Great, you know how to fix everything. Submit your resume to the company and work on the game. Make it the awesome thing you know you can make it be.

I know Mechwarrior and Battletech are not the same thing, although they get to fight with big robots. There was a sucessful Kickstarter for a new Battletech game for the PC a while ago which is still in the works, at http://battletechgame.com/

Actually they're set in the same universe. Mechwarrior is just the sim game.

That's okay. Harebrained is working hard on deploying their battletech game. Sure it won't be a first person sim but it's coming along well and unlike a lot of old school devs Jordan Weisman seems like a pretty decent producer for someone who created Battletech in the early 80's.
