BATTLETECH Beta Plans

Update #33 to the BATTLETECH Kickstarter page is a lengthy update on Hairbrained Schemes' plans for the upcoming mech combat game (thanks nin). They fill out the game's story a bit by introducing some characters, discuss merchandise plans, and mention that some of the team will be in Vancouver this weekend for Mech_Con. They also discuss their plans for beta testing, and outline which backers will be invited and how you can still get in on the action. Here's word on the beta:
Now in case you didn’t know, HBS has never done an external beta before, so we’re entering new ground here. Obviously, we’ll do our best but as you well know, “No plan survives contact...” and all that. Therefore, in order to prepare for the Backer Beta, we’re currently working towards a dry-run of the beta experience for our family members to “blow out the pipes”, test our process, and make sure everything’s ready for you.

Until we complete our dry-run and make any necessary adjustments to our plans, we won’t be able to give you a firmer date for the Backer Beta, but we can tell you that it’s targeted to begin sometime in the late January - early March timeframe and will run for at least a month. Once that beta is up and running, we’ll start things off with SKIRMISH MODE and then add PVP MULTIPLAYER after a period of time. The goal of the beta is to test our core combat system and will only be a slice of the shipping game’s total content, so it won’t include ALL the ‘Mechs, MechWarriors, maps, and environments that will come in the finished game. (Also remember, the open-ended mercenary campaign and single-player story will NOT be part of our Backer Beta.)

We publish BattleTech, we don't own the IP. We license the game from Topps, the same group that Mitch said HBS licensed the merchandise rights from.

That said, Randall Bills (CGL employee) is working with HBS on the game.

Thanks for the clarification, Peter.

No. The guys behind this are actually the guys behind the new Shadowrun games. This is going to be a computerized version of the tabletop game. They are actually working closely with Catalyst Game Labs, the current owner and publisher of the tabletop game.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I was expecting a MechWarrior running the Unreal 5 6 or whatever the latest engine is... Not expecting that :/

Still, a proper modern TBS of this is welcome as well.. maybe we'll live to see Mechwarrior 5

I'm with you, nin. I backed it on day one, just off the premise of the game, but that alpha video actually showed that the game was going to be even more awesome that I expected. I SO can't wait to play it.

OoooOOooo, was this the company that had those mech pods that would be at gaming conventions that you could pay $20 or so to play a 10 or 15 minute match and the pods would rumble all around? Those were a blast!

No.

I hope this is as good as MechWarrior 2 was in my mind. I loved me a mech that was loaded out with PPCs and would only get one volley before having to cool down!

Are any of the other mech games out there any good these days? Isn't there a free to play one?
