Out of the Blue

Yep, another weekend in Daylight Saving Time hell. It's the same for me every fall, I like the extra hour, but hate the process otherwise. I especially hate the earlier sunsets, and will continue to complain about them (as well as all those damn kids on my lawn). And to set the record straight, this silly situation is not Ben Frankin's fault, or we'd remove him from the hunny. It was a New Zealander named George Hudson who thought this up. Here's an older Nat Geo article on the topic pointing out the problems with DST. An interesting note is that heart attack rates increase by 10% when we set the clocks ahead, and drop by 10% when they are set back. So I propose just setting the clocks back an hour every six months until we've eliminated heart attacks entirely. Science!

Uh, Blue, we just ended Daylight Saving Time for the year. That's why your timezone shifted from EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) to EST (Eastern Standard Time) at 2am last night. If you dislike the earlier sunsets that means you dislike Standard time, not Daylight Saving time.

I wasn't expecting that.

To continue the pedantic streak, if you eliminate Daylight Saving Time, you get to "enjoy" early sunsets all year long.

What exactly is being argued for in our semi-annual Daylight Saving Time bitch festival?

I think what's being argued for is this: "Get offa my lawn!"

What exactly is being argued for in our semi-annual Daylight Saving Time bitch festival? Do we adopt Daylight Saving year round for later sunsets? Do we adopt standard time year round for earlier mornings? Or do we accept that synchronizing daytime hours with our clocks on a planet with seasons implies a semi-annual resynchronization day?

Only Cher would find a way.

Didn't know Jean-Jacques did the Main Street Electrical Parade music. Grew up hearing that for many years.

Absolutely, the chemicals and hormones in the body are set up that way. I think artifical lighting has really messed up with our natural patterns, with the side effects ranging from depression to weight gain, or just making generally bad decisions.

We evolved to be woken up by the blue light of the rising sun, and to be lulled to sleep by the orange light at dusk.

That mental health study is just two unrelated statistics being corrolated together. (not to mention the author has a pretty clear agenda, and it's almost like he doesn't realise that the amount of sunlight is exactly the same regardless of how you shift the time).

it'll be nice to have some light for the morning drive to work. Maybe traffic will move a little faster and people won't be so quick to play bumper cars... assuming the morning sun isn't directly in everyone's eyes.

I would love to just stick with the time we have during summer. I hate it getting dark so soon. It was already naturally getting dark sooner but now it's even worse. Bah.
