Windows 10 Adds Offline Gaming

Microsoft announces the addition of a mode to play Windows 10 games without an internet connection, a far cry from the old days where offline play was a given and online support was a feature. They outline the limitations this carries, as not all games will support offline play. They also point out the obvious points that multiplayer play and patching are not available offline. Users must specify in advance the device to be used for offline play, a designation that can be changed up to three times a year. They warn: "If you’re planning on playing offline, you’ll need to prepare your Windows 10 device while you have an online connection. It’s important that you do this while you’re online, as once you go offline, you won’t be able to make these changes." Thanks DSOGaming.

*ugh* Murphy is alive and well...

Bought 2 TB HDs to replace my current two disk Raid 1 setup.

The plan: Shutdown and open the case, hook one new drive up to a spare SATA connection, then boot and clone the existing drive/s to it, then shutdown again, replace the two old drives with the two new drives and let the raid do its' thing copying the freshly cloned drive to the other new drive.

Murphy's plan: Screw me by having the only open SATA connection on the motherboard next to the video card, and essentially under most of the power cabling. In order to connect, I'll probably have to remove the video card to give my hands enough room. What a freaking pain in the neck.

Congratulations! All of you have sufficiently reminded me why I want to avoid Win 10 if at all possible. So, new HDs, memory, and/or a video card to resolve my current PC issues.

MS fired/let go/released from service/made redundant etc. an good chunk of their QA over a year ago. A lot of beta testing for win10 goes to targeted win10 customers.

As for win10 store games, I'd actually be tempted to pick up gears4 if I could buy the xbox1 disc and use that on win10 as well. Apparently, the only way you can play it on both platforms is to buy the digital version of the game via xbox1 store. A main reason I have a console guys is that I have a physical copy of the game. Otherwise, I'd just buy it on steam for the same or likely cheaper (within a few months).

Windows 10 is the most fully featured OS, which is why I still use it. However, the interface looks like it was designed by executives - there's no way that Microsoft has even a single artist working in its UI team. The Action Centre and Settings app are abominations.

I'd love to see Valve or Google make a serious attempt at the desktop market, as Microsoft's utter lack of competition has resulted in it becoming extremely complacent. At first I didn't mind Windows 10 but now I despise it. Every update seems to make it was. What twathead decided that UAC prompts should appear BEHIND the window you're using - I'm often sitting there thinking the app hasn't loaded, only to find a UAC prompt hiding away. The Windows 10 Anniversary Update is appalling.

You make some good points about Windows 10. It has a lot of good in it but the flat UI still sucks, the start menu is horribly ugly, and (as you stated) the biggest problem with Windows 10 is that it's always changing. Instead of putting a "gay" start menu back, Microsoft could have done something bold and put an Apple like application launcher across the bottom of the screen. Or the top or sides as well. Made it customizeable.

I have 2 systems. I run Windows 7 exclusively on one and Windows 10 on the other. The Anniversary Update hasn't effected me personally but it still makes the general point. Constant change is a constant pain.

There is no reason at all for me not to keep using Windows 7 to the death since I have 2 systems to do so. I can have my cake and eat it too.
Just because you aren't afraid of something doesn't it mean it can't hurt you...

My suspicion is that Microsoft is using the fact that there was considerable opposition to Steam and Origin that later subsided as those platforms improved tremendously as a model as to why they are stubbornly sticking to their guns on this. The problem with this is that MS apparently still has no clue how to serve the PC audience.

They're probably also counting on the short attention spans of most users. Has everyone forgotten about the Games for Windows Live already? I never bought anything on it, and the only reason I had it installed was because it was required by a couple of games (which there were tools to remove it). If you bought anything on it, you were shit out of luck when they shut it down. I wouldn't trust buying anything from the MS Store because in a few years when they get bored with it, they'll shut it down an everyone that bought stuff from it will be screwed.

Microsoft needs to stop trying to be like Apple and Google and go back to what they did best, making software.

Nonsense. Windows 7's ASLR implementation is far behind 8' and 10's. Even in Win8's case, security enhancements are more than worth putting up with whatever they do to the UI.

ROFL you can only go offline 3x per year and you have to be online to go offline. Sure just let me know ahead of time when those mysterious disasters that kick me offline are about to happen so I can be sure to do that. I am sure MS knows when that tree down the block will fall and take down the power/internet lines with it.

Not what the blues article, nor the actual microsoft announcement actually says. Reading comprehension is essential. You have to designate which device you want to work for offline play. You can only switch devices three times a year, without calling XBox support.

MacLeod, go away with your intelligent reasoning! We only want people here with foam at their mouth and banging the drum (until they convert to win10 without telling anybody in a year or so). There is no real reason that your not being able to do that.

There are plenty of flavors of Linux and the different desktops, but if your switching from Windows then I would recommend KDE as that is the closest to windows compared to Gnome or Unity.

My personal favorite is opensuse with KDE, but choose as you please, from ubuntu with unity to fedora with gnome, its all free and all testable in a virutalbox on your windows install

Windows 10 Anniversary showed either Microsoft has completely incompetent QA, or no QA at all anymore! How can there be a change that breaks tens to hundreds of millions of devices. Including a majority of Webcam still on the market and they don't find the problem until after release?

This pure stupidity of "supporting" offline gaming in this way goes to show that no one at Microsoft has any brains at all anymore. Of course we already knew that when they didn't scrap the modern joke of an API.

Meanwhile Steam has had this feature for over a decade and has a functional download client, unlike the Windows Store. It doesn't even have a download limiter. Whoever designed it should have their genitals shoved in a blender... not even joking.

Microsoft is like that odd person where everything they do turns the progress back a step.

But reality is that developers will have to think long and hard whether they REALLY wanna support Windows 10 exclusively, there'll be enough "old ones" with 7 or 8 that will not, exploding PC aside, ever change.

I don't really give a shit about this. Uninstalled the store immediately after upgrading and will never use it.
But this definitely sounds like typical MS customer friendliness.
