Natural Selection 2 Free Weekend

Natural Selection 2 is free to play on Steam this weekend, celebrating the 14th anniversary of the release of Natural Selection and the fourth anniversary of the release of the sequel. Natural Selection 2 is on sale for half-off to mark the occasion, and here's word on the free weekend:
Natural Selection 2 is free to play on Steam all weekend! This Halloween, NS2 celebrates its fourth birthday, and NS1 its 14th!

Come and see what this Alien vs Marine shooter / strategy hybrid is all about. We've got new-player-friendly servers springing up all over the world, so don't be shy, come and get bitten by a Skulk!

NS2 has continued to receive constant updates over the past four years, with Update 311 being released earlier today. Even if you've played NS2 before, chances are there are lots of new features and improvements to explore.

There's a lot of hate in this thread for the game, but I think the devs have done quite a good job of cleaning up the engine and load times, and the game plays as smoothly as can be now, with hardly any hackers at all. I can only remember one time ever seeing a hacker in over 4 years of playing this, actually.
How? Because they arent rage hacking?
Rage hacking always is only a tiny minority. The real hackers try to hide it well.

The only person I ever caught cheating in this was so subtle that I had to replay the stream back to check it again, and sure enough the evidence was there.

Played thousands of hours of NS1 back in the days.
It was pretty awesome but it died off. Not quite sure why. People just stopped playing.
Balancing a game like this is actually really difficult but the balance was okay, in my opinion.

What killed NS2 was the engine. I had high hopes for this game but then they decided they want to do most things in LUA and it ended up being terribly slow.

The fucking slow HL1 engine was already not fast enough for the fades and skulks flying around the map in NS1 but their new LUA-written engine was even slower and that is why it took years before I had a proper look at this game which consisted of me playing for more than one hour or so. But it was too late. People would come when there was a major update or a sale and a few weeks later it would become really difficult to find a server to play again.

Yea I was somewhat interested in checking this out, because I couldn't remember having tried it. Was a huge fan of Gloom so I followed the development of NS1 for a long time and played the hell out of it.

Open up steam, see that I bought it on 11/10/2012 with less than two hours played - ouch. Guess I disliked it so much that I repressed the memory :X May have to give it another shot though if they've improved it, this weekend may be the last time there's enough people online to be worthwhile.

I love the asymmetrical gameplay and the fact that there is a bit of imbalance (some classes are stronger than others but you have to earn them, monsters are horrifying and fast as hell but extremely skill dependent). I love the concept of having an RTS commander overseeing the battle, but I hate to admit that it seems to fail in practice more often than not (everywhere I've seen it tried, not just NS). Miss the Gloom style where it's just balanced to not have a commander.

Who wants to play? http://www.planetgloom.com/gloom_gameplay_information.html

The engine was the worst part of the game. Ran and looked like garbage for the longest time, and the net code was awful

I still play this quite often. It's not the best game out there but it's decent enough. I backed the crowdfunding campaign for it and only started playing it years later.

"new-player-friendly"

Eh, yeah.. no.

My last free weekend was the most miserable laggy broken crapfest I ever played... so I thank for the offer but no thanks, my weekend is worth more than free NS2.. far more ^^

Damn shame what happened to NS2, I thoroughly enjoyed playing NS1 and NS2 had major potential. I still jump in a game from time to time and have fun but it pretty much dead.

I bought this game on release but I never actually launched it. It just didn't seem as good as the first one but I wanted to give something back to the devs for all the joy I got out of NS1.

Yeah, after HL3.

That is a great question. I was a huge fan of NS1 and pre-ordered NS2. Pre-ordering anything is incredibly rare for me but I had faith in these guys.

And they built a solid sequel. The problem is it just didn't have anything really new and different in it from the first one. I played it for only a few days before that "been there done that" feeling was on me. I think it was just too similar to the first one to really grab people.

Holy crap. What happened to that game? Did they mess up the balance like in NS1?

EDIT: Yeah, I just read some reviews... died exactly like NS1 did... devs having no clue about balance and hackers hackers hackers.

Hrm, probably about 3 years too late for this game, unfortunately.
