Uwe Boll Ending Film Career

Film director Uwe Boll is saying goodbye to Hollywood, or the b-movie equivalent where he's plied his trade, saying he will no longer be making movies. Dark Horizons has the details that say he's not only done ruining video game properties, but other scripts as well. Boll states the decline in DVD/Blu-Ray sales is the reason he can't make money anymore. He says this is because he has been self-funding his projects. "I never had people giving me money. I’ve been using my money since 2005 and if I hadn’t made the stupid video game based movies I would never have amalgamated the capital so I could say, ‘Let’s make the Darfur movie’," he explains. "I don’t need a Ferrari, I don’t need a yacht. I invested in my own movies and I lost money." According to Box Office Mojo, Boll's five biggest movies grossed a total of $41.2 million worldwide, so the idea that these allowed him to fund other movies reinforces the understanding that his projects were in part supported by German tax laws.

I thought it ended after his first movie?

Video games are stupid? Not you? If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. However, if you keep failing than it really isn't your thing, so do the smart thing and give up.

He played the system well enough to last as long as he did. If he didn't have a German tax shelter he would have disappeared after his first handful of films ages ago an all our attention would be focused on Paul W.S. Anderson as the shittiest director in Hollywood.

To be fair, his relatively meagre box office returns don't mean much if DVD/Blu-Ray sales were the money-makers. Were his films even in many cinemas?

Calling the garbage he created "b-movies" is an insult to real b-movies everywhere. Sharknado is Oscar-worthy when compared to the drek he excreted.

He isn't saying the source was stupid, he's saying the movies were stupid. And they were. His video game movies were stupid. Even more stupid than other video game movies. But they weirdly made him enough money to do other movies, all of which look stupid but most critics seem to find less stupid than the video game movies.

His video game movies did NOT make money. They dont had to. Boll used a german tax loophole, where investors could write off large sums when they invest something in a movie. The movie had to be produced and released to gain from this, but in no way it had to make money in itself. The tax relief was the goal, not the movie making any money. And as this loophole was closed ... Boll stopped churning out video game movies, did nothing for a while, than made two films with his own money, tried several crowdfunding projects (none reached its funding goal) and now he's FINALLY done with terrorising the world with his "movie making".

Are you saying that a movie could make more money if it bombed? Excellent, I've been working on a script, it's called Springtime for Chris Roberts... guaranteed bomb.

This is hardly specific to Germany though. If the majority of tv and film lost their government subsidies and other tax based assistance most production houses would close almost instantly.

We see it all the time here in Canada - as soon as one province changes their funding model just about the entire industry moves to the next province with the best deal (after the obvious protests and demonstrations).

Wasn't the whole point for him to make failures for tax write offs, based on the German Tax credit law which expired.

Personally I blame Blue for calling his mockery, a career! Giggle
