Uwe Boll Ending Film Career

Film director Uwe Boll is saying goodbye to Hollywood, or the b-movie equivalent where he's plied his trade, saying he will no longer be making movies. Dark Horizons has the details that say he's not only done ruining video game properties, but other scripts as well. Boll states the decline in DVD/Blu-Ray sales is the reason he can't make money anymore. He says this is because he has been self-funding his projects. "I never had people giving me money. I’ve been using my money since 2005 and if I hadn’t made the stupid video game based movies I would never have amalgamated the capital so I could say, ‘Let’s make the Darfur movie’," he explains. "I don’t need a Ferrari, I don’t need a yacht. I invested in my own movies and I lost money." According to Box Office Mojo, Boll's five biggest movies grossed a total of $41.2 million worldwide, so the idea that these allowed him to fund other movies reinforces the understanding that his projects were in part supported by German tax laws.

No. No, he really isn't.

Yeah, lets hope Abrams is next.

I was thinking Michael Bay. That man has singlehandedly ruined my childhood (e.g. Transformers, TMNT, etc).

Man, that sucks. I didn't realize he had a time machine and went back to the 80s and early 90s and ruined the things you enjoyed before you could enjoy them. Hope he doesn't do that to me. In the meantime, I just have some easily-ignored films that do nothing to change my opinion of what I liked as a kid (even though nothing is more detrimental than going back and watching some of those cartoons now. They all assumed kids were idiots.)

I know I had seen the name before, but couldn't recall anything about him. Checked IMDB, never even considered seeing any of his movies.

My thoughts: Stop whining. If you had enough money to fund the making of multiple films, it means you made 100s times more money than 99.5% of the people who ever saw any of your films dreamed of making.

Roger Corman ???? REALLY?

A lot of his movies are classics. You should be drawn, Quartered, Stoned and that thing they did to Mel Gibson in Braveheart for saying such a thing.

Yeah, I'm thinking Roger Corman is a b-movie king. Much better than Boll. I loved some of his movies as a kid like Piranha, Battle Beyond the Stars, and Galaxy of Terror.

That's too bad. His movies were shit, but shit movies have their time and place to be viewed, if only to laugh your ass off at how bad they are and marvel at how they got made.

I know a lot of gamers have a hate boner for Uwe Boll for butchering their beloved franchises, but hindsight has shown us that even when vastly more talented directors with vastly more money try it, they STILL butcher video game movies.

At least Uwe Boll was wasting less money than these other people, and you knew what you were getting.

With these big shot Hollywood video game movies there's always a sense of disappointment because deep down there was a small spark of hope that with all the talented people involved THIS video game movie would be the one that didn't suck.

With Uwe Boll there was no disappointment because the expectations were so fucking low to begin with.

What about World of Warcraft and Resident Evil especially the first? Not even bad movies per se.

True, true

The crew was paid, the actors were paid, contractors were paid and the investors "made" money by using the tax loophole.

The movies itself ... mostly total bombs. Like for example "Far Cry". Production costs around 35 mio. dollar, made an estimated 3-4 millions wordwide AFAIK. Which does not matter much, when the movie is only the means to a complete different end.

Looking at his IMDB page, he directed 33 movies, and produced 53.

Impressive, in sheer volume, at least. I skipped pretty much all his video game movies after I started watching In the Name of the King, but Rampage was actually pretty good. I believe I watched it on Netflix streaming.

I'll check out Attack on Darfur at some point.

There will always be shitty directors, and even good directors who make a shitty movie or two. But there might never be another Uwe Boll, whose mountain of shitty movies may remain unmatched for all time.

Uwe Boll, I salute you.

*EDIT* Typo.

Sadly true, but the amount of vitriol a thread like this dredges up is almost as entertaining as some of the movies.
