Sid Meier's Civilization VI Released

Time for one more turn, as 2K and Firaxis announce the release of Sid Meier's Civilization VI, the new installment in the beloved turn-based strategy series. The Civilization VI website has all the details and a launch trailer showing things off. Here's part of the announcement:
2K and Firaxis Games announced today that Sid Meier’s Civilization® VI, the latest entry in the award-winning turn-based strategy franchise, is now available worldwide for Windows-based PC. Sid Meier’s Civilization VI offers players new ways to interact with their world, expand their empire across the map, advance their culture, and compete against history’s greatest leaders to build a civilization to stand the test of time.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI marks another milestone in the Civilization franchise, which has sold-in over 35 million units worldwide and changed the gaming landscape by bringing the strategy genre to unparalleled heights. In Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, cities will physically expand across the map to create new, deep strategic layers, active research in technology and culture will unlock new potential ways to play; and the large variety of leaders will pursue their own agendas based on their historical character traits as players race to achieve victory however they choose to play.

I got burned on BE and balked at the UK price, but folks seem to be pleased with it and I found a more reasonable price for deluxe via GMG. If they bilk me with horse armour DLC using up the deluxe allowance I think I'll be done with Civ series though.

i dont know if anyone noticed this yet, but even though Civ VI is supposed to be an AMD title, a budget NVIDIA GTX 1060 card will beat out a Fury X card in performance

Sounds like you didn't miss anything then.

I must admit, the bad taste left over from BE is the only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger on buying this. BE was *so* bad that's hard to imagine this being worthwhile at launch, even if the general impression seems to be "yes, it is."

Help!

I know I am getting Civ VI, it is inevitable. I have never missed any part of the series other than BE. That said, I think I will have to wait on a sale for this one. Still looks promising though.

Nope. If you have all the DLC with the base game? You get the special ed. for free.

Loving it so far. Best out of box Civ/Firaxis experience ever. (Other than Civ 2 maybe).

A few quirks and bugs but content wise it's amazing as a vanilla release, all the important mechanics are there and much better integrated than they were in the Civ IV/V expansions. Cities actually take a bit of effort to plan out and specialise. They have taken a lot of queus from Endless Legend but communicated the systems a lot better.

Still in my first game at Prince with 7 other civs, Egypt is wrecking all of us and my continental rival matched my tech with numbers and high production in our first short war so I took the snivelling peace offering. Maybe I should have pressed my luck and taken a city to reduce the future threat but seemed too risky with most my units spending time being rotated for healing. I doubt I'll win but seems like it's going to be fun not winning, like in paradox games.

My one hope might be culture victory. Had Shakespeare pump out some plays and I think i'm the first to get aircraft and archaeology, so might be able to win on tourism before Cleopatra converts the world to Confucianism.

I've come close to buying this several times and the price keeps holding me back. I think u can get it on Amazon for 20% off as a prime member but I still can't pull the trigger.

I went and watched a twitch stream of it and it didn't make difference. I can't help feeling like this is another rebooted sim city. The graphical style they went with leaves me wondering when the iPad release us going to be.

It does not feel anything like Sim City to me, but it does seem to cling to Civ-style gameplay to a fault, imo. The original Civ had things like leaders that are more gods than people due to limitations of computers at the time- managing dynastic rule was not in the cards for early 1990's strategy games.

Same thing with the turn based approached... I think "real-time pause-able" is superior in every way- the flow of the game just feels artificial with turn based mechanics. I only prefer turn based mechanics for deep historical simulations, like the AGEOD games, or GG: War in the (east|west) series.

That said, I think this could be fun, but it's priced at such a premium that I'm not sure I'll ever pick it up. It would need to hit the $39.99 price point before the dlc come for me to even consider. With games like Endless Legend going for $7 on sale, I'd probably go that route before blowing $70 on a game I might only put 20 hours into before I'm bored to death.

It was horrible in the last one.

Religion is a victory type now, if you convert all other civs to be predominantly yours, you win. It is pretty neat that your missionaries/apostles/prophets will fight other ones, though! So you can protect yourself that way.

I'm not keen on the fog-of-war graphics, the contrast between visible and out-of-sight is too much. It's a minor issue and I'll probably get used to it - if not I'll get over it.

I think this is intended. I love the idea that the unknown area is just a map that is probably accurate, but will also reveal secrets when its revealed. I've never seen anyone integrate a paper-style map fog of war as well as Firaxis has. I also think the new art has the feel of the original Civ than any other release.

That said, this is still a weird 4x/God Game hybrid. I wish there was better political systems and somekind of leadership turnover, dynastic rule, etc. (a la EUIV).

Yea isn't DoS awesome? I had put off purchasing it for the longest time in hopes of a deep cut in the price but ended up buying it at $20 a few months back (during the summer gaming drought) and holy crap I should have spent $60 on this game.. the devs deserve it. I've since put 109 hours into it (sans the ~20 from my first game which I restarted after totally fubar'ing the character builds lol).

Played an hour or two of Civ 6 last night. I think it's a marked improvement. I agree I think the city states are handled far better than in Civ 5, and is it just me or do they never expand their borders (or perhaps just much.. much slower). Just about every single aspect of the game seems to be improved, sans one: the UI is a bit overly complex IMHO. It's really hard to find things that should be a click away but require opening 2 sub-menus to reach - like demographic information. The game does appear to be 'more' complex than its predecessor so I expected a more complicated UI but man it seems unnecessarily so.

My first game I decided to start as Saladin (Arabia) and go a science or potentially faith victory. I stopped at turn 50 and so far I've had a lot of fun with it. Even the boring early turns are somewhat exciting lol.

Wait for a sale.
I got my copy 25% off from Direct2Drive, but GMG is running promos on this game almost every week.
You don't want to buy it at full price than a few days later it's on sale again.

I am not very good at Civ games either but I did enjoy the little bit of it I've played.
Frijoles, try the tutorial missions. They did help explaining a bunch of things to me.
Even if you are not new to Civ games I think those missions are helpful to point out the differences in Civ6

Played 3 hours last night before bed. So tired. I like the changes to city-states. I didn't do much with them in Civ 5 other than dump a bunch of resources on to them. I suck at Civ though. Also started my own religion (Frijolism). Interface is taking me a bit to get my head around. One city suddenly was going to leave due to negative amenities. I didn't realize that was a thing to monitor. Can't find Great Person points anywhere, but lots of references to increasing the point count.

Overall I'm enjoying it. Not a single bug so far. Runs silky smooth. I like having 2 different trees to follow (research and civic). I'm not going to get much sleep this weekend.
