Star Citizen Squadron 42 Delayed

The Squadron 42 campaign for Star Citizen is delayed until 2017, reports Kotaku UK, saying the news was revealed during a livestream from CitizenCon. The first chapter of the single-player side of the space simulator was most recently supposed to come to backers this year, but this news confirms rumors of a delay that surfaced last month. On the bright side, Eurogamer notes that Cloud Imperium Games released a new video showing off how planets will be procedurally generated in the game, along with other tidbits, including a sandworm, though they don't specify whether this is showing us Beetleguise or Dune. Back to the delay, the Kotaku UK story offers two slides with details on the state of the project, and here is what those say:

Hey at least you took a risk and either way it goes, you're part of something big. Just like this year's election, nobody actually knows for sure how things will end even if things are looking one way. The inevitable post-mortem with all the internal dealings will have some entertainment value if nothing else.

As an original backer from 2012 I want them to do it right. Once the game has been released it can't be taken back and the review scores will stick, along with first impressions. Obviously the delays are disappointing but they're far from unexpected. CIG has only just been showing off vision stabilisation and hasn't even shown us Star Marine yet, so the core systems just aren't in place yet.

If CIG can't show us the Squadron 42 presentation or release 3.0 this year then I'll be disappointed. If they can't get out 2.6 this year then I'll be concerned.

The Squadron 42 delay was more than expected given the state of the "game" (flight model, animations etc.). According to the CitizenCon presentation, the S42 campaign has been split up into 28 chapters comprising 60+ missions. We will have to see how many chapters they are going to deliver per episode. I would not bet on more than a single chapter in 2017... if that.

The much bigger surprise (to me at least) than the S42 delay was the fact that travel to multiple star systems has been delayed all the way to version 4.0.
Even the most optimistic people don't seriously expect 4.0 before early 2018 at the very earliest.
This means that Shitizens will be stuck in the single Stanton system for the entire calendar year of 2017 or easily 18+ months total from today. Wow.
This also means that they are even further behind and struggling even more massively with their infrastructure development ("net code", multiple instances and MMO backbone) than even pessimist boaters like myself suspected.

So, early 2018 and there will still be 99 star systems missing. Will the artists be able to finish more systems up to that point so they could theoretically release a bunch of systems in one go? Maybe... but I doubt it because the systems will have to go through extensive live testing. You can not have missions spawn inside a planet or an asteroid and all that crap that can hardly be tested in an isolated sandbox. The art asset creation per se is only a fraction of the whole shebang. It takes a lot more before you can put a star system online.

At this rate the full game with the promised 100 star systems at launch will definitely not be finished even close before the turn of the decade. Realistically, we're talking ~2022-ish at this point if things work out pretty well until then (which probably won't happen given the track record so far).

Why? Is that a "there's no way it will be good enough to waste my time on it" statement or a "I've followed the development of this too closely to play it unless it's the best game ever made" kind of statement?

Often I see people turned off of games they followed closely, because they followed closely. Personally, the best course seems to be just not following development closely.

Your tastes change, and so does your situation. 5 years ago, I loved playing RTS games and long, deep RPGs. Now I barely play either. I prefer shorter, simpler stuff. I know the Witcher 3 is perhaps the best RPG ever made, and right up my alley, but I haven't picked it up because I don't see myself with either the time or motivation to play it.

I get that, which is why I gave nin the benefit of the doubt, but I think many swear they'll never play it due to how annoying the development process has been.

Similar to how some refuse to buy games because of broken promises from the devs. At some point, that's on you, too. In many cases millions of people love these games because they don't pay close attention too soon. If someone is the type to repeatedly swear they won't buy a game because of stuff behind the scenes, maybe best to stop paying attention to the behind the scenes.

I have little interest in SC - I just don't like these types of games. But if it comes out and is great, I may check it out. I haven't really bothered reading these articles so the nonsense is meaningless to me.

Where is Star Marine? Now hard can it be to make that?

Where is the Hangars that you can invite your friends into to show off the stuff you have brought form CIG (Ships, Hangar flair)? How hard could that be to make?

I like how it looks but I do see some hiccups in the engine during this presentation. That's in a controlled environment as well, with their specific systems for this specific demo (the fucking guy on the mountain Rolleyes )

so far it looks like a flashier No Man's Sky.

I was hoping for a really awesome single player spaceship game out of this and it looks like it could be that. It's too bad they are trying to make this the super awesome everything MMO.
