Otherland Launches

The Otherland website announces the official launch of Otherland, the free-to-play MMORPG. This concludes a whirlwind open beta that lasted under two weeks. Here's word on the game and plans for future content:
Already heard that Otherland, the Online RPG based on the famous novely by Tad Williams, is from now on available in the commercial version?

Yes, you heard right! Thanks to the support of our lovely and loyal community, we've finalized the long-awaited F2P MMO with several valuable contributions.

We've added a new game entry and the game also received a redesigned class testing area, in which you can check out all available game characters as well as their abilities. While working on fundamental performance improvements, Otherland also received optimization of several NPCs and Quest which will round off your gaming experience!

The next major content update will contain an overworked combat system with improved enemy AI for an even more action-loaded gameplay. Also, another larger expansion around Christmas time is already scheduled with a level cap raise, new quests and a brand-new world.

Free to pay is more like it. There is nothing free about MMOs that claim free to play. Too many strings attached to enjoy games like this.

I will say that Star Trek Online and Star Wars The Old Republic do a pretty good job of allowing the most out of the game without crippling the player. Granted Old Republic has quite a few 'quality of life' things to purchase if ya want them.

Although I didn't much like the novels, his descriptions of online-gaming greatly influenced my expectations of what an MMO should be. The fantasy role-playing game played by Orlando and Sam in the book were the ultimate example of what I expect from an online game and - sadly - no game has come close to matching those expectations (Ultima Online, which was in beta at the time the first novel was published) was a good start, but rather than improving on that foundation the industry seems to have moved backwards). It's sad to see such an innovative franchise re-imagined as yet another characterless F2P game filled with grind and monetization.

F2P games need some kind of labeling provided in all advertising which lists cash shop and microtransaction items and their cost.
Things like how much in game currency does 1 US dollar buy. What are the prices of the most popular items in the cash shop etc.

Calling an online MMO free to play is more like calling a casino free to enter.
